This is actually part of the playbook by industrial lobbyists dating back to the middle of the last century. "Rocket Scientist" carries a lot of cache even in areas utterly unrelated like a link between smoking and cancer, asbestos, acid rain, pesticide use, evolution, and climate change. The fact that these people have no legitimate expertise is irrelevant, they're rocket scientists.Astronauts in the field of climate study have been experts since....?
I highly recommend reading Merchants of Doubt (link), industrial lobbyists have a very well worked strategy and everything from emphasizing uncertainty--which is always present in science, to funding legitimate but motivated studies of complementary causes peddled as alternatives (e.g. Lindzen's work), to attacking individuals (e.g. "Climategate" or the personal attacks on Tyrone Hayes by pesticide companies) etc. is all well documented. None of the strategies employed are surprising but they're all effective.
