Media Dustin Poirier Says He Was Extremely Depressed, Suicidal After Justin Gaethje Loss

I never wrestled, I played ball sports in my day, but tons of kids in the family wrestle so I've spent a ton of time at wrestling tournaments.

You notice quick there how much more loss impacts the athletes, every age. Losses suck in ball sports but it's a team thing, you move on to the next. I think where wrestling is primarily a singles thing, it increases the feeling of failure and potential depression after a loss.

Plus you've got all the work they put in, which is just a different level compared to most other sports. Not to discredit those but wrestlers are just built different, they work HARD, so losses are heartbreaking. You see more tears at wrestling tournaments than any sport I've ever seen, but they aren't from physical pain.

All that to say I imagine that same thing applies to fighting, but even another notch further up. Especially when your future is literally kind of depending on it. I figure a lot deal with some pretty rough feelings after a big loss.

There's no talking to people like that lol. Reminds me of this friend I had years ago I was explaining schizophrenia to her, and she up and says oh I don't believe in that. Not just schizophrenia, but any mental illness at all. So strange, like talking to a flat earther. Oh word this entire branch of medical science is just made up, and I guess all the people talking to demons and aliens aren't crazy they're just faking it.

{<huh}
Right, and almost all police are this way. When I worked in prison mental health, the cops would ask me, 'well how do you know they hear voices?' OMG, no concept of mental illness at all. That's the attribution error- just blame the person's ethics for symptoms of epigenetic syndromes. Like geez.

This is a sad sign, and these comments from dipshits here along the lines of "glad the champ got this win to turn things around " are laughably short sighted and ignorant. If this guy requires the rush of a knockout victory inside the octagon to constantly tilt his emotional issues, that's a very poorly tenable crutch. He'd he better off walking away from fighting altogether and dedicating his mind to bettering himself from the inside.

Yeah, he probably has a lot more problems than just fighting to make himself like this.

He has a wife and kids, there’s more to it than just losing a fight. It adds to it I’m sure but probably a lot of other unhappy shit going on.

I doubt it’s just fighting to put yourself in such a spot. Dustin has a family. It’s not like he’s person with nothing but fighting.

Other unhappy shit probably also happening in his life.

I mean, if you can’t blame someone because it’s their genes, you can’t ever really blame anyone.

We are all a combination of our genes and our environment. All your actions are attributable to either your environment or your genes.

If you can’t blame someone for having bad genes, you can’t blame someone for anything, there is no responsibility.

Okay, you have bad genes, they are still your genes so I blame you.

Right, and a very complex combination of both. An interesting emerging field is epigenetics, which is impacted by both genes and environment. We have a certain amount of our genes that are dormant until something in the environment causes a chemical reaction which activates them; this is believed to be the explanation for several major psych disorders (major study going on right now). Another example would be when you see identical twins that look exactly alike as kids and don't look so alike when they get older. Both have lived in different environments and had many epigenetic changes moving them further apart.

Perhaps you should look into what depression actually means in the larger scope. I think you would be surprised at how complex and multi-splintered it is. Some of us experience a depression in our lives that is mild to moderate based on our life situation and think this can be generalized to everyone with depression, ignoring a wide range of different levels and causes for depression in various people and groups (biochemistry, genetics, epigenetics, trauma, etc.). Also, believe it or not, I have treated people who had your perspective but became enlightened when it happened to them or someone close to them. Pretty easy to make attribution errors when you don't understand the whole picture and haven't experienced it.

It’s a mental weakness. Soft ppl that can’t cope with life. The sooner people stop babying these weaklings the better society will be.

OK, but you must admit science is better than some idea that someone pulled out of their ass.

Porier did a interview with Helwani after his win over BSD, and in the interview he says he was depressed after losing to Gaethje, Helwani digs deeper and Porier essentially says he wanted to commit suicide after the loss. This is very troubling to hear, the mans sanity depends on if he's on a winning streak or not. I hope something can be done because this is extremely concerning, what happens if he loses again ??

It's definitely the ugly side of CTE, that's for sure. Poirier's a warrior but he's no doubt taken loads of damage throughout his long career.
