Drug Smuggler Senteced to Death

When you fly in, and fill out your visitation/customs/disembarkation card on the plane, it clearly reads something about: Drug Trafficking is punishable by death

When I went to Singapore, this really stood out to me....that and their other plethora of laws.

That's right - I forgot about the big metal box in the bathroom before you get to customs giving smugglers one final chance to avoid a look at the death penalty.

A hypothetical Hive-Mind that you could just plug into and download all the knowledge on the internet matrix-style in seconds.

But ya, it still might not get rid of people as stupid as him.

Pfft, you still mad? I must've struck a nerve.

It should be known, that it was your own ridiculous stance that we are in "dark times", because some old lady from the UK, got busted smuggling a fuckload of drugs in Indonesia.

You know, 'cause according to this clown, in the future there will be no seperate governments, or laws to break. Statism will be wiped out, anarchy will reign, and the people will run the big happy world.

If it's true about her son this is terrible, a lose lose for sure. But what I don't get is if she was scared about her son's life for real, why would she name the men when she got caught, if she didn't come forward before when she was approached?

She knew the laws and she broke them, no sympathy from me. Have you ever arrived at an Asian airport? There are HUGE signs everywhere clearly stating 'Warning: Drug trafficking is penalised by death'
Yeah, that makes it OK.

I knew this was Indonesia right away. I remember seeing the death penalty for smuggling drugs signs at the airport in Bali. She fucked up good.

She did fuck up good and she took an absolutely crazy risk, but that doesn’t make it OK. Not in my book anyway.

Since when is a barbaric punishment OK just because you put up a sufficient number of signs warning about it?

A lot of people here just go from “she’s stupid” to “she deserves to die”. Incredible.

she doesn't look Indonesian

That's what it says.

The law specifically says:

So I'm not sure why you continue to say you can't be executed for smuggling. The law specifically allows it.

I'm not sure what you are missing. You cannot be executed for drug smuggling. Here is the drug smuggling statute, along with penalties:

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/21/960

There is nothing in there about the death penalty.

You keep on citing this law, which is not a drug smuggling statute:

Read those carefully. If you don't understand, there isn't really anything else that I can do to help you. I'll just leave this alone now, so as not to hijack the thread entirely.

Ha! Right, well, Indonesia is quite a big country with lot of different looking folks, so one shouldn't assume such things. :)

Seriously though, after reading a bit more on this it seems like she might be a bit mentally slow, or at least extremely guillable, and the smugglers used that to take advantage of her. And the Indonesian authorities are using her case to make an example, b/c of the political effects of harming Bali's image.
It's a crappy situation all around, but one thing I think we can all agree on - when you're in another country, be respectful and follow their laws! Regardless of how brutal or arcane they may be. Same applies for when foreigners visit your country.

Here's a short news piece from the BBC on it:

The best rule of thumb is to avoid third world countries entirely.

Wrong. Third world countries in my travels have been some of the absolute BEST times I've ever had. But it's one of those things you have to have balls to try first.

As for this article, she knew the rules, she broke them. Nuff said.

How'd you get the dubs?

But yes, you cannot be sentenced to death for drug smuggling, in and of itself.

I got them for calling somebody a "twat" in the War Room. They expire tomorrow night.

Ah, I believe you told me that before. Seems like they've been on awhile.

Back to the death penalty questions, there are very few crimes that don't involve a killing that are punishable by death. Treason and Espionage for example. Drug smuggling isn't one of them.

I know dude. I'm trying to explain that to somebody else. He is confused by the "Continuing Criminal Enterprise" statute. I think that, because it's a Title 21 statute, he mistakenly believes it to be a drug smuggling statute.
