That's not drug smuggling. That's talking about folks like Lazcano Lazcano. Kingpins, who may not have taken lives, but who operate large-scale drug trafficking operations that take many lives. The taking of the lives isn't an element of the crime that needs to be met, but it is implied in the "kingpin" status.

To qualify for the death penalty under the act, a Drug Kingpin has to have directed a "continuing criminal enterprise" involving either large quantities of controlled substances or 20 million dollars in gross receipts from the enterprise over a one year period.

That's what it says.

The law specifically says:

(1) an offense referred to in section 408(c)(1) of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 848 (c)(1)), committed as part of a continuing criminal enterprise offense under the conditions described in subsection (b) of that section which involved not less than twice the quantity of controlled substance described in subsection (b)(2)(A) or twice the gross receipts described in subsection (b)(2)(B); or

So I'm not sure why you continue to say you can't be executed for smuggling. The law specifically allows it.

Why was John Forte of the Fugees pardoned by GW Bush after serving half of a 14 year sentenced?
He was caught with 31 lbs. of liquid cocaine worth about $1.4 million.

Do you guys actually know the story behind this. The woman is a grandmother from the uk and she was being pressured into being a mule because the traffickers were threatening her son. To save his ass she carried a bag (not realising how much sniff was in it) and got caught. She is a poor patsy caught up in this tragic story and now she's going to chew on a bullet.

She even fingered 3 other people who were the mr bigs in the operation and they got off with minor punishments!!!!

It's fucking disgusting and stinks!!!

I hope her son is able to deal with indirectly causing the death of his poor mother.

EDIT: Just read the BBC article on it. That's some bullshit right there. At least it sounds like she has a couple more appeals, and most death sentences aren't actually carried out.

That's down largely to their history (the Opium wars) and culture. Of course, the same applies in Indonesia (southeast Asia in general) but the unusually strict nature of many of their laws is certainly exacerbated by the fact that religion interferes greatly in the running of their society.

On flights to Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore the warnings are on the flight when you fill out the forms. You have a chance to dump your drugs in the lavatory.
