Movies Dragonlord's Movie Adaptation Vol. 3: NAMOR: THE SUB-MARINER

SCENE - TOMB

Two days later, Namor, Janus and Andromeda are standing over the tombs of their fallen comrades and friends, Flehm and Dartanis.

SCENE - CORONATION

A coronation is taking place at the Palace. Vanzan is going to be proclaimed as the new king of Atlantis. The event is televised throughout the entire Atlantis, even in the Outer Zone. Aside from a smug Vanzan, everyone in attendance look glum. The High Priest crowns Vanzan. A lackluster clap from the audience.

A few seconds after Vanzan makes his speech, Namor, Janus, Andromeda and Fen arrive at the great hall. An outraged Vanzan asks why is Fen even here when she's banished from the Capital and why is Namor not in jail for his violation prior to the invasion. Vanzan demands that Namor and Fen, as well as Janus and Andromeda for their part in the jailbreak, be arrested. The Royal Guards do nothing.

Namor walks towards the podium. The crowd parts for Namor. The Royal Guards also move out of Namor's way. Namor arrives at the podium and is face to face with Vanzan. Everybody in Atlantis is glued to the monitors, waiting for what is going to happen next.

Namor just stands perfectly still, steady and unwavering while Vanzan is quivering, looking around at the guards and at the crowd. After several tense seconds, Vanzan slowly removes his crown, kneels down on one knee, bows his head and presents the crown to Namor. Namor puts the crown on his head and the crowd shouts for joy. Janus shouts "Long live King Namor!" The crowd chants the same with fervor. We see the people in the Capital and in the Outer Zone also cheer. From the fish vendors, to the factory workers and all the way to the recruitment officers, everybody was spiritedly cheering and applauding for their new king, Namor.

The camera spins around newly-crowned Namor, holding the royal trident, at the Great Hall, capturing the ardent crowd in the background. The camera finally stops spinning around and settles in on Namor. Camera slowly moves forward to Namor's face. Fade to black.

THE END

POST-CREDITS SCENE

At the surface world, we see a lighthouse. Inside the lighthouse is a messy work office of some sorts. The walls and whiteboards are filled with newspaper clippings, charts, diagrams and illustrations.

The resident of the house, whose face is not shown, leaves the house to get the newspaper from the mail box. The mailbox name plate says "Mackenzie." The newspaper's headlines reads "Sub-Mariner Saves Crew of Sinking Ship" with an unfocused picture of Namor.

Dragonlord's Fantasy Casting Vol. 14: NAMOR

After finding the right actor to play Namor, I thought it would be cool to make a story for the movie that will accompany the fantasy casting. And here we are. Currently, the Namor movie rights is back with Marvel Studios but Universal still has the distribution rights.

AIDAN TURNER as NAMOR
rgFhgCD.jpeg

After watching the mini-series And Then There Were None last Jan. 2016, I finally found the perfect Namor actor - Aidan Turner. In the mini-series, Turner exuded all the characteristics that would make him ideal to play the Sub-Mariner. Check out this video to see what I see in Turner. The 33-year-old Irish actor is best known for his work on The Hobbit trilogy, Being Human, and Poldark series.

2nd choice: Luke Evans (Immortals, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug)

COURTNEY EATON as VERENA
RpDg4VV.jpeg

Verena is an original character I created for my story. She's the ultimate dream girl - gorgeous, classy, witty, strong, brave and kind-hearted. And that's why it's such a tragedy what befalls to the Princess. The lovely Courtney Eaton exhibited all of the traits I am looking for in Verena in her 2016 movie Gods of Egypt (she was one of the few highlights of the film). The Australian actress made her acting debut in Mad Max: Fury Road.

CAITRIONA BALFE as FEN
o6Kk8pe.jpeg

Atlantean royalty, Princess Fen was the daughter of Emperor Tha-Korr, the lover of Leonard McKenzie and the mother of Namor. I chose the beautiful Caitriona Balfe due to her strong character performance in Starz's Outlander.

OWAIN YEOMAN as ATTUMA
57tKMMN.jpeg

Attuma is an Atlantean nomadic warlord and, for unknown reasons, was born with strength, endurance, and speed far superior to those of any normal Atlantean. The 6'4" Owain Yeoman was chosen due to his volatile and explosive performance in AMC's Turn: Washington's Spies.

BRIDGET REGAN as ANDROMEDA
kPgPtPp.jpeg

The beautiful and heroic Atlantean warrior would be played by Bridget Regan. Even though she already played Dottie Underwood in Agent Carter, it's such a waste not to use the 5'9" American actress again in the MCU. Regan is just fabulous in action roles, whether it be in the fantasy series Legend of the Seeker or as a femme fatale in White Collar. She can be currently seen kicking butt in the criminally underrated series The Last Ship.

ERIC BANA as KING KAMUU
42hrnfM.jpeg

Kamuu is the last king of pre-Cataclysm Atlantis, and first king of sunken Atlantis. The role is small but Eric Bana (Troy, Black Hawk Down) would be great in giving the character the dignity and solemnity for the opening scene of the movie.

LANCE REDDICK as MEERO, RICHARD MADDEN as KHALEN
eGElcsi.jpeg

Counselor Meero is the wise adviser of the King and a loyal friend of Princess Fen. I chose the enigmatic Lance Reddick (The Wire, Fringe) as Meero. Richard Madden is best known as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones. I've always felt his face fits more as a villain. Hence, Madden is cast as Lemuria's Prince Khalen.

ED EASTWICK as VANZAN, SAMUEL ROUKIN as BELARUS
VCMgaO0.jpeg

Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl) always had that smug, arrogant charm about him and that's why I chose him as the deplorable Prince Vanzan. [Spoilers ahead] At first, Belarus seemed like the typical spineless yes-man of Vanzan but turns out to be much more in the end. Who better to portray him than English actor Samuel Roukin, who plays one of the BEST villains in television history as John Simcoe in Turn: Washington's Spies.

GODFREY GAO as JANUS, CARLOS PENA as DARTANIS
riIwMw0.jpg

Janus and Dartanis are two of Namor's closest friends. I chose Godfrey Gao because I needed a tall actor to play Janus and the 6'4" Taiwanese actor had an intriguing presence about him in the forgettable Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Needed a shorter and buffed actor to play Dartanis and chose Carlos Penavega (Big Time Rush, Grease).

PETER MENSAH as BONES, AARON PAUL as FLEHM
XX8pwM6.jpeg

Peter Mensah was awesome in Starz's Spartacus that he was my first choice as the Vanguard drill instructor "Bones" Rhandoo. I envisioned Flehm as a shorter merfolk that naturally gives off a sneaky and shifty aura and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) has that.

MACKENZIE CROOK as GALDAN, RIZ AHMED as WESLER
5khK1p8.jpeg

Galdan is the unscrupulous fish vendor that sets things in motion in the film. Mackenzie Crook (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Office) was born to play the guy. Riz Ahmed is having a breakout year with his HBO crime drama Night Of and in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I chose Ahmed to play the mousy Wesler.

Building the World of NAMOR: THE SUB-MARINER

In this post, I talk about building the world of Namor and how Atlantis would work in a realistic setting.

knCrWRB.jpg

- Atlantis is a technological-advanced civilization. One of my proudest moment is coming up with the solution on how Atlantis' technology works under water. They have factories that are water-free (meaning they can use electricity, wielding and such) where they build everything from waterproof gadgets, weapons, vehicles and everyday household items.

- All the merfolks communicate in their special sonar language. But for the benefit of the movie audience and to get the optimal performance from the actors, the merfolk characters all talk in English.

- I don't know if it's doable but a lot of the scenes are not shot underwater. I envision the film being shot the same way they would film scenes inside a zero gravity spaceship and then just add special effects to make it look like the actors are underwater. The primary reasons why it is being shot this way is actors tend to squint their eyes a lot while underwater and can be visibly seen as holding their breath. The Atlanteans should not be seen struggling to see or breathe underwater. Plus they have to open their mouths a lot for the dialogue.

- Homo Mermanus have the ability to adjust their body's bouyancy, thereby enabling them to walk underwater if they choose to.

- The set-up for the houses and buildings will be unique in the sense that it will incorporate the fact that merfolks can swim up or down. So a lot of these buildings will have outside doors at the top floors. Some of the buildings will look like this (like some of the fish market building) where customers can just swim up, down, left or right.

- To prevent from floating mindlessly, most of the merfolks sleep inside comfortable cell-type cages or have one of their limbs binded by comfy shackles.

- The merfolks write on a special paper wrapped in thin plastic. Think of it as a child's magic slate paper saver or magnetic drawing board toy but much thinner and sophisticated.

- The original setting for the story was set in World War II. When Namor broke out of jail, he was supposed to go hide to the surface world and live with his father (after Fen reveals his father is still alive). Namor would then join Captain America and the Invaders for a one-time mission. When Atlantis is under attack, Counselor Meero reaches out to Namor to come back.

- One of the reasons why I scrapped the 1940s setting was the tempo would have been uneven if Namor goes to the surface world. This would be fine if it was a mini series but it would be too jarring for a feature film.

- Second reason why I rejected the 1940s setting was it would mean that Namor and the Atlanteans have incredible long life spans since the goal down the line is to have Namor interact with the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. Didn't want to do the whole creepy scenario where the mother looks about the same age as their adult children like they did with Andrew Niccol's sci-fi movie In Time.

- The seed of the Namor story came when I finally found the right actor to play the character back in January 2016 [1] while watching the BBC miniseries And Then There Were None.

- I was actually working on the story for Thor 3 and 4 around July 2016 when my mind wandered off and started thinking of a Namor movie. Completely got sidetracked and focused on the Namor project instead. After forming much of the skeleton for the Namor movie set in the modern era, I conceived a prequel movie (which is what you just read).

Dragonlord's NAMOR: THE SUB-MARINER Movie Adaptation (Abridged Version)

This is the abridged (shorter) version of the script. If you want the full version, click Here. Please play the video below to accompany your reading.

8,000 years ago, King Kamuu ordered the magma pits to be opened to destroy the Deviant invaders but it also caused a chain reaction that sank Atlantis to the bottom of the sea. The city’s sorcerers transform the Atlantean survivors into water breathers, creating a new species in the process - Homo Mermanus.

26 years ago, Princess Fen of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis investigates a disturbance on the surface. She meets Captain Leonard Mackenzie. After a few weeks, they fall in love. King Thakkor sends a war party to find his daughter thinking that she’s dead or kidnapped. The Atlantean war party kills Leonard and his crew and brings the Fen back to Atlantis. After learning Fen copulated with a surface dweller and is pregnant, Thakkor disowns and banishes his daughter from the Capital. Several months later, Namor is born – the first known Homo Sapien-Homo Mermanus hybrid.

Present. Namor, now grown up, lives in the slum area of Atlantis known as the Outer Zone. Throughout his life, Namor has been shunned and ridiculed for looking different and being a fatherless bastard. His strength, endurance and speed are also superior from the normal Atlanteans.

Once a week Namor goes to the Gigan Crab cave to procure the discarded baby carapaces, whose innards are considered a delicacy, and gives it to his mother who makes a living as a fish vendor. And once a week, Namor goes to the army recruitment center but gets rejected every time. Namor’s menial day job is working at one of the Atlantean water-free factories where they build weapons, gadgets and vehicles.

After witnessing his factory friend, Wesler, beaten up for befriending him, Namor severely beats up the attackers. Namor lands in jail for the umpteenth time. A mysterious stranger, who claims to be a friend of Fen, bails out Namor.

Having been fired from the factory, Namor is helping his mother at the fish market. Galdan, a jealous fish vendor, followed Namor to the Gigan Crab cave. Princess Verena drops by the fish market when three Gigan Crabs attack. A bleeding Galdan inadvertently led the Gigan Crabs to the Outer Zone. Namor killed the two Gigan Crabs and saved the Princess’ life.

Namor is invited to the Palace to meet the King Valdis in gratitude for saving his daughter. Namor meets the asshole Prince Vanzan and his yes-man cousin Viscount Belarus. Namor also meets Counselor Meero, who was the mysterious stranger who bailed him in jail. The King asks what reward Namor wishes. Namor asks to be part of the Vanguards, an elite group of Atlanean soldiers.

At the Vanguard boot camp, Namor comes into conflict with the drill instructor “Bones” Rhandoo but eventually both parties come to respect each other. Namor also bonded and forged long-lasting friendship with his fellow Vanguard trainees Janus, Flehm, Dartanis and Andromeda. After a few months, Namor and his friends are full-fledged Vanguards.

Receiving a distress call that the Atlantean mining colony is under attack by the barbarian warlord Attuma, Namor and his friends intervene and stops Attuma. Namor fights the legendary and mighty Attuma to a standstill. Attuma flees when Vanguard reinforcement arrives.

Namor’s heroic deed has made him a hero to the Atlantean public. Namor is invited to the pre-wedding celebration of Princess Verena. The Princess is to wed Prince Khalen from Lemuria as part of the peace treaty between the two warring kingdoms.

Namor and Verena talk privately. Verena talks about her birth mark which many scholars believe that she is the “chosen one” that will rule the kingdom. Namor reveals that he recently found out that he can command small sea creatures. Both reveal their affection for each other but Verena cannot escape her obligations to her family and the kingdom.

During a routine patrol, Namor’s Vanguard unit spots humans drowning due to their ship sinking in the middle of a violent storm. Defying the decree that no Atlanteans must interact or be spotted by surface dwellers, Namor rescues the humans. After saving the humans, Namor is knocked unconscious by the Vanguards.

Fearing his growing popularity and royal blood lineage, Prince Vanzan persuades the High Council to kill Namor for his crimes. They will forego a public trial and plan to make it look like extremists broke in the jail and killed Namor.

The assassins arrive in jail but Namor’s friends (Janus, Flehm, Dartanis, and Andromeda) stopped them and broke Namor out. Counselor Meero found out about the assassination and informed Namor's friends. Namor and his friends are no longer safe and plan to leave Atlantis maybe forever.

Prince Khalen and Princess Verena are officially wed. During the wedding reception, Khalen puts on the Serpent Crown on Verena, transforming her into a serpent-like being. The Atlantean guests and guards have been poisoned by Viscount Belarus, who has been conspiring with Lemuria for a while now. Belarus also managed to sneak in hundreds of Lemurian troops inside the Capital. Khalen reveals to King Valdis that Verena is indeed the “chosen one” but for the other side.

To complete her corruption, Khalen tricks Verena into killing her own parents. Gone forever is the sweet and kind Verena and replaced with a new dark and sinister persona. Khalen, Belarus and Verena leave the Palace to meet up with the incoming Lemurian armada.

Namor and friends are on the Outer Zone when news broke out that the Capital is under attack by Lemurians. Namor rallies the Outer Zone citizens to fight for Atlantis. Knowing that the Atlantean militia is no match for the well-trained Lemurian invaders, Namor goes out to find reinforcements.

As the battle rages on, the Atlantean militia are pinned and about to be finished off by the invaders. Namor arrives with an army of Gigan Crabs under his command and turns the tide of the battle.

Namor goes to the Palace. A badly wounded Meero tells Namor that a large Lemurian fleet is heading this way. Namor finds the cowardly Prince Vanzan hiding in the massive Vault room along with fifty Royal Guards, whom Vanzan refuses to let them leave his side instead of helping the battle outside. A disgusted Namor leaves and grabs the Horn of Proteus, which legend says should be used in Atlantis’ darkest hour. Fen stays behind to accompany a dying Meero.

At the border of Atlantis, Namor blows the Proteus Horn but nothing happens. Nevertheless, the Atlanteans fight a losing battle against the Lemurian armada. Flehm and Dartanis are killed. Namor is wounded. All hope is lost when Giganto (a 400-foot sea monster summoned by the Horn) arrives and systematically destroys the Lemurian fleet.

Khalen and Belarus attack the already-injured Namor. After a grueling battle, Namor manages to kill Khalen. As Namor is about to kill Belarus, Verena comes between them. Namor can’t bring himself to kill Verena. Belarus and Verena escape. The Lemurian armada also retreats. Atlantis has prevailed.

Two days after the invasion, Vanzan is now crowned as the new King of Atlantis. The public and even the Capital citizens are not too thrilled. The coronation is televised across the entire Atlantis. Namor interrupts the coronation ceremony. Namor walks to the podium, with the guests and Royal Guards all parting for him. Namor comes face to face with Vanzan. After several tense seconds, Vanzan takes off his crown, kneels and presents the crown to Namor. As Namor puts on the crown on himself, the crowd and everyone in Atlantis rejoice, shouting “Long live, King Namor.”

I always thought Karl Urban would've been a great Namor but he is a bit long in the tooth for it now.

Who owns the rights?
Namor is with Marvel Studios but Universal probably has distribution rights.

Kevin Feige Confirms NAMOR Movie Rights Back with Marvel...

Kevin-Feige-Namor-Sub-Mariner-071814-Dragonlord.jpg

Last May, rumors surfaced that Universal and Legendary were planning a Namor movie for their untitled 2016 project. When asked by IGN in a new interview if Legendary could make the Namor movie, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige flatly answered no. Furthermore, Feige confirmed that Marvel has the rights back but there are some complications. When asked if Marvel Studios would be the only one to make a Namor movie, Feige answered:

"Yes, but it's slightly more complicated than that. Let's put it this way - there are entanglements that make it less easy. There are older contracts that still involve other parties that mean we need to work things out before we move forward on it. As opposed to an Iron Man or any of the Avengers or any of the other Marvel characters where we could just put them in."

Created by writer-artist Bill Everett, Namor first appeared publicly in Marvel Comics #1 (Oct. 1939). The mutant son of a human sea captain and a princess of the mythical undersea kingdom of Atlantis, Namor possesses the super-strength and aquatic abilities of the Homo mermanus race, as well as the mutant ability of flight, along with other superhuman powers. The first known comic book antihero, the Sub-Mariner has remained a historically important and relatively popular Marvel character.

Joe Quesada Reiterates Namor Movie Rights Back with Marvel Studios

Marvel-Studios-Namor-Sub-Mariner-2-Dragonlord.jpg

On the latest Fat Man on Batman podcast, Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada reassured fans that the Atlantean King himself Namor is back at Marvel Studios.

At least, to the best of his knowledge. When hosts Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin inquired about the whereabouts of the Sub Mariner and who has him, he said: "We do, he's in the comics." Smith then said: "no, what studio. How come you guys aren't diving into the water. Do the same people who have Iron Man have Sub Mariner?"

Quesada responded: "Yes, as far as I know yes we do. Yeah, it's not at Fox, it's not at Sony."

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said in the past that if anyone was going to make a Namor film it would be them but did admit it was a little complicated.

“Yes, but it’s slightly more complicated than that,” Feige explained back in 2014. “Let’s put it this way – there are entanglements that make it less easy. There are older contracts that still involve other parties that mean we need to work things out before we move forward on it. As opposed to an Iron Man or any of the Avengers or any of the other Marvel characters where we could just put them in.”

I'm going to have to read this in the morning when I can get the full effect. I always enjoy these though. Thanks for tagging me.

Read it all and loved it! I loved the scene when Namor was being trained by "Bones"! I had an instant flashback to the training scenes of "An Officer and a Gentleman"! Thank you for including me on this!

What is the origin of Lemuria, and where is Attuma from?

Also isnt there supposed to be a Eternals movie?

And is this the same Atlantis from Kull the conqueror, and Conan universes? I think Marvel owns those two.

Pretty good choice especially when he was younger but I personally find Urban's "fat" face too distracting for the role.

Marvel at least used to own Kull and Conan. I was a big fan of those books. I don't ever remember Namor being in a story with them though. I think the timing is off or something but same world. Not sure though.

Also, Marvel has the atlanteans, Lemurians, Deviants, Eternals, greek gods, norse gods, egyptian gods, japanese gods, and the inhumans. At some point you would think one of these would come and claim the surface and basically just keep humans under their thumbs, or these groups would wipe each other out.

In the comics, Celestials attacked Lemuria which caused it to sank. In my movie, I'm not sure yet if I want to stick with that. I'm leaning towards the Great Cataclysm also caused Lemuria to sink.

Attuma is from a tribe of Atlantean barbarians who were banished from Atlantis years ago.

No, there's no Eternals movie planned.

Marvel's Atlantis is not in the same universe as Kull or Conan.

Sick. I went through a big namor
phase as I got sidetracked reading
the avengers as a kid.

The Atlantean setting was super
interesting to me. Excited to see
it in film. Got high hopes for this.
