FINDING DORY Swims to Record $55 Million on Friday

6787634_finding-dory-trailer-reveals-the-highly_t5a93d755.jpg

Pixar and Disney's animated sequel Finding Dory made a huge splash at the Friday box office, swimming to a record $55 million from 4,305 theaters for a projected weekend opening of $139 million.

That would be more than enough to wrest the crown for top animated opening from DreamWorks Animation's Shrek the Third, which debuted to $121.6 million in 2007. To date, Pixar's best opening is Toy Story 3 ($110.3 million).

Finding Dory's Friday haul marks the largest single day in history for an animated film, eclipsing the record $47 million earned by Shrek the Third on its first Saturday. Dory also grabbed an A CinemaScore.

Finding Dory kicked things off by earning $9.2 million in Thursday-night previews. That's also a record for an animated film, besting last year's Minions ($6.2 million).

Finding Dory opening of course timed with American school kids starting summer break.

Finding Dory

10/10

Well this was great. The opening montage did a good job of trying to get the feels going like in UP , although UP's life of love piece is still the GOAT in that department. Though it is on par with the Jessie's History montage from Toy Story 2. That said I think this is Pixar's strongest sequel alongside Toy Story 2 and ahead of TS3 and light years ahead of Monsters University and Cars 2. Still liked Finding Nemo more but doesn't take away from this. Great animation , outstanding voice acting ( especially from Ellen Degeneres ) and nice comedic timing. It's not openworld adventure that Finding Nemo was but the setting made sense and provided unique challenges for the protagonists. I expect this to be neck and neck with Zootopia as far the front runner for the Animation Oscar , however Moana looks good too so maybe that will also be great. Disney overall is on a roll, just more magic from Pixar.

- off topic Idris Elba has been a good luck charm in movies where he lends his voice talents , Jungle Book, Zootopia and a minor voice role here. Let's see if that good run continues with Star Trek Beyond , which is an actual live action role but you won't recognize it's him until you hear the voice.

wtf , I am pretty sure I watched that movie Clown more than a year back

glad to hear finding dory is doing so well <3 i mean that was expected lol but still makes me happy to see. gonna go die happy after i get to see it (. . . one day lol), ahhhhh!!! so exciting that it's finally out

I may have watched the Italian version with subtitles I guess. I remember it being an average movie.

It's a Canadian / American produced flick so don't know why it would be in another language. For some reason Italy got the original release while it took awhile to get approval for other markets.

Critics' Reviews for CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE

Rotten Tomatoes: 67% approval rating (61 out of 91 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson make for well-matched comic foils, helping Central Intelligence overcome a script that coasts on their considerable chemistry.

Central-Intelligence-061816-Dragonlord.jpg

Entertainment Weekly - The hows and whys of the quest at hand aren't exactly important, as Central Intelligence is far more concerned with squeezing its leading men together-often literally-and kicking back to enjoy the juice, and that's a wise move. C+

New York Daily News - Yes, the appealing mismatched megastars earn their paychecks with game performances. But other than an occasional zinger hitting the mark, laughs are in short supply. 2/5

Richard Roeper - "Central Intelligence" is one of those slick, gunplay-riddled, stupidly plotted, aggressively loud buddy movies - so formulaic and dumb, even if you see it you'll probably forget you've seen it by the end of the year. 1.5/4

Rolling Stone - You go along for the ride because Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson promise something they can't deliver: a movie as funny as they are. 2/4

I agree with the Central Intelligence reviews. Went in expecting gut busting laughs, but was only mildly entertained. IMO, the Rock was a tad bit funnier than Kevin Hart.

Critics' Reviews for FINDING DORY

Rotten Tomatoes: 95% approval rating (157 out of 165 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: Funny, poignant, and thought-provoking, Finding Dory delivers a beautifully animated adventure that adds another entertaining chapter to its predecessor's classic story.

Entertainment Weekly - One of the biggest and most pleasant surprises in a film with too few of them is just how resonant Dory will be for parents of kids with learning disabilities. B

New York Daily News - There is still humor to be fished out of the setup — particularly a cynical octopus (Ed O'Neill) that steals every scene he can get his greedy tentacles on. 4/5

Richard Roeper - It's a solid, entertaining, well-paced sequel featuring terrific voice work, a clever script and some ingenious action sequences. 3/4

Rolling Stone - If Finding Dory lacks the fresh surprise of its predecessor, it still brims with humor, heart and animation miracles. 3.5/4

Empire Magazine - Pixar sequel-phobes be damned - this is a dazzling and technically impressive return to form that delivers a similar high to Finding Nemo without feeling like a retread. 4/5

Definitely want to see more of them teaming up though would like it to be directed a bit better.
The two actors will team up again for the Jumanji remake:

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in Talks to Star in JUMANJI Remake

Sony is getting closer to rebooting a Robin Williams classic with two of the busiest actors in town. Sources tell Variety Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart are in early talks to star in Sony’s Jumanji, a new adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s original 1981 adventure book.

Schedules are still being worked out, as both Johnson and Hart have heavy production loads ahead, but insiders say things are moving toward a deal.

Johnson has an opening this fall with his New Line pic Rampage possibly shifting to 2017. The plan would be to shoot Jumanji before the third season of his HBO series Ballers. Johnson will also shoot Fast 8 this summer, reprising his role of Agent Hobbs.

Hart is expected to shoot The Intouchables remake for Weinstein this summer opposite Bryan Cranston, and according to sources, working out this part of the schedule could prove difficult.

The pair showed great chemistry after co-hosting the MTV Movie Awards, and with anticipation high for their upcoming New Line action comedy Central Intelligence, Sony sees this as the perfect opportunity to pair the two up again for a tentpole.

Jake Kasdan is on board to direct with Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner writing the script. The pic set to bow on July 28, 2017. Principal photography is expected to start this August in Honolulu, HI.

I read "Clown Raiders". Was excited. Then see I'm wrong. Dissapoint.

Weekend Box Office:

FINDING DORY Makes Box Office History with $136.2 Million Debut

Finding-Dory-061916-Dragonlord.jpg

Some 13 years after Finding Nemo first hit theaters, Pixar and Disney's sequel Finding Dory made a gigantic splash at the box office, landing the biggest domestic opening of all time for an animated title with $136.2 million from 4,305 theaters. It's also the only animated movie to crack the overall list of top 20 openings, ranking No. 18.

Finding Dory easily topped the box-office chart, while Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart's Central Intelligence did solid business in its opening, earning $34.5 million from 3,508 theaters to come in No. 2. Some rival studios have the action-comedy coming in higher, but Sunday's NBA Finals Game 7 could subdue moviegoing later on Father's Day.

Overseas, Finding Dory grossed $50 million as it rolled out in 32 percent of the marketplace for a global bow of $186.2 million, including a Pixar-best $17.5 million in China and $7.6 million in Australia.

The previous crown-holder for top animated domestic launch was DreamWorks Animation's Shrek the Third, which debuted to $121.6 million in 2007. Until now, Pixar's best was Toy Story 3 (2010) with $110.3 million.

Finding Dory — which garnered an A CinemaScore — is a needed boost for the summer box office, which has seen a number of sequels underperform. It also reminds of the power of families in driving mega openings, as well as underscoring the nostalgia for Nemo. While families made up the largest chunk of the audience (65 percent), adults turned out in force (26 percent), followed by teens (9 percent). Imax theaters, not generally a family destination, turned in $5 million domestically.

Finding Dory's Friday haul of $55.2 million marked the largest single day ever for an animated film, eclipsing the record $47 million earned by Shrek the Third on its first Saturday. Finding Dory kicked things off by earning $9.2 million in Thursday-night previews, likewise a record for an animated pic, besting last year's Minions ($6.2 million).

"In a funny way, the 13-year separation between the first and second movie was serendipitous," said Disney domestic distribution chief Dave Hollis. "It's part of what created a want-to-see, need-to-see movement. And it's the 17th consecutive Pixar film to receive some variation of an A CinemaScore."

Even though I swore to avoid every super hero movies from now on, I intend to make an exception for Dr Strange. The theme doesn't talk to me, the character is relatively unknown but the lead actor made me turn my head. Not the typical super hero cast so it gives a good idea of the movie's aim.

Of course, when I read "Tilda Swinton" on the supporting actor list, I was sold. She could play an old paraplegic grandmother and I would still go out of my way to watch her: she is really good at portraying larger-than-life characters. I believe she's playing the Dr's sensei so we're in for some good acting chops once again!

Dr. Strange has an amazing cast. Aside from Cumberbatch and Swinton, there's Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen.
