Critics’ Reviews for ZOOTOPIA

Rotten Tomatoes: 98% approval rating (124 out of 126 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: The brilliantly well-rounded Zootopia offers a thoughtful, inclusive message that's as rich and timely as its sumptuously state-of-the-art animation -- all while remaining fast and funny enough to keep younger viewers entertained.

Zootopia-The-Big-Donut-Dragonlord.jpg

Entertainment Weekly - Zootopia delivers the genre’s requisite barrage of quick-hit puns and pop culture riffs, but it’s loopy moments like when Judy goes to the Department of Motor Vehicles that give this modest film its magic. B

Rolling Stone - This animated crime caper comes ready to party hard, but also takes a deep dive when necessary, especially when certain species are treated as threats and cause public panic. Listen up, Mr. Trump. 3.5/4

Toronto Star - The result is a slam-dunk candidate for best animated feature in next year's Oscars. But the pleasure now comes in appreciating the sumptuous artistry. 4.5/5

Forbes - It's funny, it's clever, it's exciting and suspenseful, and it operates as one of the more potent "social issues" pictures that we've seen from a major studio (even during the Oscar season) in quite some time. 9/10

Richard Roeper - Zootopia is one of my favorite animated movies. Not one of my favorite animated movies of the last year or two, or of the last decade, or in recent memory. It's one of my favorite animated movies, period. 4/4

Critics' Reviews for LONDON HAS FALLEN

Rotten Tomatoes: 27% approval rating (27 out of 100 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: London Has Fallen traps a talented cast -- and all who dare to see it -- in a mid-1990s basic-cable nightmare of a film loaded with xenophobia and threadbare action-thriller clichés.

2liikwz.jpg

Entertainment Weekly - By casting its villain as a suspiciously ISIS-like Middle Eastern terrorist network, London Has Fallen makes itself into a political movie-but its politics are heinous. C-

Richard Roeper - Like the original, London Has Fallen features a top-notch cast and some crackling good action sequences. And, alas, like the original, this is a cliché-riddled, aggressively violent, laughably plotted exploitation flick. 1.5/4

Rolling Stone - Director Babak Najafi, who not surprisingly staged something called Easy Money II, botches the action sequences so crudely, consistently and cynically that he makes Michael Bay look like Kurosawa. 0/4

Toronto Star - It makes the 2013 original Olympus Has Fallen - loglined as "Die Hard in the White House" - seem in nostalgic comparison like quality entertainment and a model of logic and good taste. 1/4

James Berardinelli - London Has Fallen is competently made and offers what any viewer would reasonably expect. There's plenty of action, a fair amount of wide-scale destruction, and a rousing climax. 2.5/4

Critics' Reviews for WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT

Rotten Tomatoes: 61% approval rating (66 out of 108 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: While WTF is far from FUBAR, Tina Fey and Martin Freeman are just barely enough to overcome the picture's glib predictability and limited worldview.

Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot-Fey-Thornton-Dragonlord.jpg

Entertainment Weekly - What work better in the movie are mostly smaller moments: the jokes that land, the rapport between the reporters, and all the weirdly ordinary ways people manage to find a new normal, even in the most WTF circumstances. B-

Richard Roeper - If this role isn't remembered as THE signature moment when we came to think of Tina Fey as an award-level dramatic actor as well as an iconic comic force, it's a substantial step in that direction. 3/4

Toronto Star - Writer and actress tilt between insecurity and bravado, employing dry, observational humour tinged with occasional sentimental flashes only outwardly out of character. 3/4

Rolling Stone - That Tina Fey is funny is a given. That she gets inside the tangled mind of a complex woman on a perpetual hot seat is something new. 3/4

James Berardinelli - Tina Fey is the biggest asset but even she's not sufficient to make it worth more than a marginal recommendation and a suggestion to wait until it shows up on home video. 2.5/4

Friday Box Office:

ZOOTOPIA Roars $19.5M Friday, Heads for $70M-Plus Weekend

2hhzqcz.jpg

Disney's Zootopia roared to a $19.5 million Friday at the North American box office, where it now looks to earn a record $70 million-plus for the weekend.

Zootopia is all but assured of besting Frozen to score the biggest three-day debut of all time for Disney Animation Studios, as well as scoring the top March opening for an animated film, not to mention one of the top starts for any film.

That's no small feat, considering Zootopia is original content. And in 2013, Frozen had the advantage of launching over the Thanksgiving holiday when grossing $67.4 million during its first weekend in nationwide release.

The family film will easily come in No. 1, ending Deadpool's three week rule. Deadpool still has plenty to celebrate, including crossing the $300 million mark at the domestic box office on Friday.

Among other new titles on the marquee this weekend, Gods of Egypt actor Gerard Butler is returning to theaters in London Has Fallen. The film earned $7.6 million Friday from 3,490 locations for a projected $21.3 million weekend, behind the $30.4 million debut of Olympus Has Fallen.

Critics' Reviews for KNIGHT OF CUPS

Rotten Tomatoes: 47% approval rating (27 out of 57 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: Knight of Cups finds Terrence Malick delving deeper into the painterly visual milieu he's explored in recent efforts, but even hardcore fans may struggle with the diminishing narrative returns.

34xkx86.jpg

Entertainment Weekly - Essentially shapeless and paced like the tide rolling in, Knight of Cups should be reserved for hardcore Malick fans only, those who have the patience to metaphorically wade through the literal wading, which there happens to be a lot of in this movie. C-

Newark Star-Ledger - The mood isn't particularly new, and Malick's deliberately elliptical style doesn't feel quite as fresh as it did a few years ago, before younger, less talented filmmakers began imitating him. Yet there's still something hypnotic here ... 2.5/4

Blu-ray.com - There are only so many swaying close-ups, droning thoughts, self-aware performances, and frustrating fragments of drama one can take before complete disinterest sets in. C

Rolling Stone - Since Malick runs from even a hint of plot, it's up to us to draw conclusions. Must all films about alienation be themselves alienating? Take a walk on the beach and ponder that one. There's a line between artful and arty, and Malick has crossed it. 2/4

New York Observer - With the corpse of a nightmare called Knight of Cups, I have finally given up on Terrence Malick. This dog of a film is as riveting and fascinating as a walk-in bathtub. 0/4

Weekend Box Office:

ZOOTOPIA Soars for Record $73.7 Million Opening Weekend

Zootopia-Poster-030616-Dragonlord.png

Over the weekend, Zootopia — buoyed by glowing reviews and an A CinemaScore — launched to a record $73.7 million from 3,827 theaters in North America, the top showing ever for Disney Animation Studios and the top March opening for an animated title, besting Dr. Suess' The Lorax ($70.2 million). Disney Animation's previous biggest opening belonged to the 2013 blockbuster Frozen ($67.4 million).

Zootopia is also huge overseas, where it began rolling out two weeks ago. The family film took in another $63.4 million this weekend — including $24 million in China, the biggest opening ever for a Disney Animation or Pixar release — putting its foreign total at $158.8 million and worldwide haul at $232.5 million. Imax theaters, not exactly known for family films, turned in an impressive $8.5 million globally.

Zootopia easily placed No. 1 at the worldwide box office, ending Deadpool's three-week rule. Deadpool still had plenty to celebrate as it zoomed past the $300 million mark in North America, earning $16.3 million from 3,624 theaters in its fourth weekend for a domestic total of $311.2 million through Sunday. Overseas, its weekend take was $21.2 million for a foreign cume of $362 million and worldwide total of $673.2 million.

Among other new titles on the marquee, London Has Fallen fared the best, placing No. 2 in North America with $21.7 million from 3,490 theaters. However, it came in behind expectations after earning scathing reviews (audiences liked it better, giving it an A- CinemaScore). In 2013, sleeper hit Olympus Has Fallen debuted to $30.4 million.

Like London Has Fallen, Tina Fey's war dramedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot also came in behind expectations, opening to an estimated $7.6 million from 2,374 theaters, one of the lower starts for the popular actress.

Weekend Box Office: 'Zootopia' Defeats 'Deadpool' With Record $73.7 Million

- The Birth Of A Nation got an Oct. 7th/2017 release date.

I think this will be really good. I'm very interested in slave rebellions. Hoping this will be like a modern America-set Spartacus (the Kubrick movie, not the cheesy tv show)

Critics' Reviews for 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

Rotten Tomatoes: 91% approval rating (117 out of 129 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: Smart, solidly crafted, and palpably tense, 10 Cloverfield Lane makes the most of its confined setting and outstanding cast -- and suggests a new frontier for franchise filmmaking.

10-Cloverfield-Lane-Mary-Elizabeth-Winstead-013016-Dragonlord.jpg

Entertainment Weekly - It's lean, and taut, and tense, and moves with Swiss-clock precision. Still, it's not as scary as you want it to be. B

New York Daily News - The best reveal of "10 Cloverfield Lane" is that the script from Josh Campbell, Matthew Steucken and Damien Chazelle ("Whiplash") is strong enough to have made a compelling stageplay instead of a creature feature. 4.5/5

Rolling Stone - The movie comes loaded with everything a psychological thriller needs to shatter your nerves - and then kicks it up a notch. 3.5/4

Newsday - "10 Cloverfield Lane" is as economical as a stage play but packs in plenty of visceral violence and visual surprises. Whether you've seen the first film or not, this one is a thoroughly entertaining treat. 3/4

James Berardinelli - Take away the disappointing, disjointed, and anti-climactic final act, and this is an effective white-knuckle psychological thriller. 3/4

Critics' Reviews for THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY

Rotten Tomatoes: 39% approval rating (33 out of 84 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: The Brothers Grimsby showers viewers with a steady stream of Sacha Baron Cohen's edgy humor, but too many gags hit the wrong side of the line between audacious and desperate.

Brothers-Grimsby-Poster-031216-Dragonlord.jpg

Entertainment Weekly - This is also the kind of movie where a baby wearing a diaper and English-Flag facepaint walks through a bar carrying a half-full pint of beer, and the kind of movie where more than one set of private parts are thrust right into Sacha Baron Cohen’s face – and yours. God help me, I laughed. B+

New York Daily News - Full disclosure: I was the lone critic in America to unabashedly recommend "Zoolander 2," so I'm certainly not ashamed to even less abashedly beg you to go see "The Brothers Grimsby." 4/5

Rolling Stone - Cohen and Strong have a lively chemistry when Leterrier doesn't douse it with sentimental drool. You get that sinking feeling when you realize that gross is all there is to Grimsby. The comic sting that set Cohen apart got lost somewhere. Maybe in that elephant's vagina. 2/4

Empire Magazine - Bad taste can be hilarious, shaking a laugh from even the most reserved, and opening minds to new worlds. But there are also tastes so bad they just make you retch. 1/5

Critics' Reviews for EYE IN THE SKY

Rotten Tomatoes: 95% approval rating (41 out of 43 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: As taut as it is timely, Eye in the Sky offers a powerfully acted -- and unusually cerebral -- spin on the modern wartime political thriller.

2ltrkmp.jpg

Entertainment Weekly - The threat of an international incident ... invokes a chain of political grandstanding and second-guessing, which Oscar-winning director Gavin Hood plays out with artful, measured intensity. A-

New York Daily News - In war, everything has consequences, the movie declares, and if you think you can predict all of them, you're either a fool or running for office (or both!). No answer is perfect. 4/5

IGN Movies - It would have been exceptionally easy for Eye in the Sky to take either a pro- or anti-drone warfare stance and simply show the horror of the alternative point of view. Rather than doing that, the movie offers a thoughtful, nuanced middle ground. 9.2/10

Rolling Stone - It's a setup for a moral debate on drone warfare. That Eye in the Sky is nowhere near that dry and academic is a tribute to director Gavin Hood to hold us in a vise and keep squeezing. Alan Rickman deserves our salute, as does a film that honors his fierce intelligence. 3/4

Friday Box Office:

ZOOTOPIA, 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE Score Big; THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY Craters

10-Cloverfield-Lane-031316-Dragonlord.jpg

Disney Animation's Zootopia continues to rule the roost in its second weekend, while the J.J. Abrams-produced 10 Cloverfield Lane is posting impressive numbers in its North American box-office debut.

Elsewhere, there's out-and-out carnage. Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy The Brothers Grimsby may not even hit $3.5 million, the worst opening of all time for the British comedian. Fellow new offerings The Young Messiah and The Perfect Match are faring only slightly better.

Disney Animation Studios' Zootopia is enjoying an incredible hold, grossing $12 million Friday from 3,827 theaters for a projected $47 million-plus second weekend, a decline of just 37 percent. Through Sunday, the movie's domestic gross will be $140 million or more for a worldwide total of nearly $400 million. (The animated film is doing huge business in China.)

10 Cloverfield Lane placed No. 2 Friday with $9 million from 3,391 theaters for a projected $24 million-$25 million weekend.

The Brothers Grimsby came in No. 8 with $1.2 million from 2,235 theaters after being skewered by many critics and receiving a B+ CinemaScore.

Box Office Report: 'Zootopia,' '10 Cloverfield Lane' Score Big; 'Brothers Grimsby' Craters

10 Cloverfield Lane

I was pleasantly surprised by this. This movie was a roller coaster ride . The tension and suspense was very well put together , John Goodman was extremely creepy to me and Mary Elizabeth Winstead played a character that went through a lot and I found myself rooting for her especially during the Movie's climax ending. I don't want to give anything away because the not knowing what exactly you were watching for a good portion of the film was key to successful tone early on , but I do recommend seeing this.

8/10

Agreed with this rating and review, really fun watch and Goodman was excellent.

I give Cloverfield Lane a 9! Excellent little flick. Movie cost 15 million to make but could even have been made for way less. Will have huge ROI. Loved it.
