I'm not justifying the interim title, and (in general) I am against them. The interim BW title when Cruz was on the shelf as a result of injuries, and (in my opinion) was one of the few exceptions to the rule. It made sense and was justifiable. It wasn't that Cruz didn't want to fight, he couldn't. Condit vs. Diaz (as GSP was on the shelf) was passable.
The UFC created a LW interim title fight between Ferguson and Lee barely two months after Conor took the LW title from Alvarez because he wanted a break. Whittaker/Romero was an interim title because Bisping had a date with GSP. Aldo/Edgar was a interim title fight because of Conor not wanting to defend. McGregor/Mendes, Holloway/Pettis... the increasing frequency of using an interim designation is also taking away from the legitimacy of being considered a champion.
Now they've got a LW contender fighting an injured FW for the LW title. The UFC doesn't draw a line in the sand when it comes to titles, they're throwing darts at a dart board.
I agree, it's a desperation move, but it was being done more so to placate Colby as he seemed be ducking other WW's and focused solely on his next fight being for a belt. He gets a "title fight" and the UFC gets a marketing ploy. Honestly, to me, I would probably value this fight more as a title contender's elimination match than a title fight and was going to watch it anyways.
The reason I say RDA earned it is because the UFC billed Lawler/RDA as the title contender's elimination match, with the winner to face Woodley. That being said, in my opinion I think RDA's has a better run of recent WW wins than Covington.
I agree the winner of this fight should face Woodley, though I still expect Tyron to weasel out of it.
