Dorian coming to visit Clippy

Ooh shit that looks nasty

I looked it up, there was a vessel capsized in Brunswick, Georgia.
Kinda my job to know this but it wasn't on my patch so I don't care

Did that ship get into shallow water as the hurricane surge went through? It can't be very deep there. It looks like a ship that has a ramp that carries vehicles and heavy equipment.

Do they land on your porch after being burned?

How did your party garage weather the storm?

I made out lucky - everything was fine

Not even a branch landed on my yard

I heard from others who lost a piece of siding etc but I got super lucky

Especialyl with a cenruty old house high up on a hill and exposed

I assume they sense the incoming danger and scadaddle in their bird way.
Some birds, migratory birds definitely have an uncanny sense and are known to change their routes and go thousands of miles more to go around incoming storms, even ones not formed yet. So much so that their flight paths can be tracked as part of an early warning system that something is coming.

But not all birds, particularly shore birds can fly away hundreds of miles to find an area that will not be impacted by a wide storm front. All sorts of shore birds have to find a place to hunker down and ride out the storm.

I wonder if as part of evolution this knowledge is passed down, as many other instincts are, and they just know a few safe places to go, such as to go to the Leeward side of a cliff and seek a roost down low or if it is 'taught' behaviour or just blind luck as to which survive and which do not.

Maybe @Zookeeper Gabe has some info he can impart on how birds weather huge storms?

They are really amazing when it comes to migrating.. imagine if we randomly left how long we would take and to know the paths etc.. it's hard now with modern transportation and modern tools we just let others do the thinking for us and we get a ticket. :D

I think it was just leaving port when it started listing, I assume it's a tidal port so it was plenty deep enough at the right time to come and go, but once it fell over and tide went out it looks like it's in the shallows.

And yeah it's a roro vessel, basically only mobile cargo and everything is loaded inside up a big ol ramp

high up on a hill

Oh wow I didn't realize...

Yeah I have a cellar with a hole in it so water drains and as I'm half way up a big hill I shouldn't have flooding issues but my basement gets a little wet sometimes

They usually have everything fastened down to prevent it moving in rough seas but they likely aren't secure enough to stay in position if the ship lays on it's side like that. It might take a very long time to raise that. They'll have to bring in some heavy lifting equipment or maybe even cut it up in place.

Aw you guys

Well it rained a bunch and sideways and my porch roof leaked after I thought I fixed it. That's it for me. Had to drive out to help my Mom fix her cellphone and I was the only car on the road

Walked to work this morning, still windy, buy only small branches down and leaves about

I got lucky actually the storm hit Nova Scotia hard but I'm in South New Brunswick and fine. I just missed all the warning zones and got the least bad parts of the storm.
Across the Strait from you we got hit but it wasn't too bad here in Charlottetown either. On the other hand, I was just talking to someone who lives on the south shore and they still don't have their power back.

Glad you're ok friend

I honestly wasn't even a little bit worried. The worst hardship likely around here was just being without power. Sure, if you live alone in an outlying area, especially near the water, it would be a concern, but here in town, you only have to be worried if you're prone to doing stupid shit like driving over downed power lines and the like.
