Multiplat DOOM: The Dark Ages

I can't even buy it as my video card is too old to utilize the forced Ray Tracing. I've been wanting to upgrade for a while, but I've had a lot of diy projects that have taken up too much time and money.
The forced Ray Tracing wasn't the best idea.
I have a used RTX 2070 Super and an RTX 3080 if you're interested...

Thanks Clipster, good talk.

Hope you've been well bud
Coincidentally I've played a few rounds of Hades recently. This type of interaction reminds me of the banter between Zagreus and Charon. It always plays out in a way like this:

Liked the game overall. Would probably score it 8/10. Not sure how I'd rank it against the other two. I haven't played them in a long time. Maybe I should reinstall Eternal. I know they have a PS5 version and they added a horde mode or something because I see it in my trophies.

I think the reason I can't score it higher than an 8 is because I really disliked the open map design. They all felt the same and there was too much running around back and forth to get the secret key and the corresponding secrets. It was just annoying and didn't add anything to the experience.

I think the other thing I disliked were those enemies that you couldn't fight until you destroy the morale of the army first. Very bizarre decision to implement it that way. There's just this big enemy with shields going around it and you can't do a damn thing about it but avoid it for a long period of time.

The music was kind of weak too.

Things I liked were the gameplay, guns, enemy design, corridor levels, story (I actually prefer cinematic story telling), and the shield grew on me.

Oh and fuck the bugged trophy. Can't get my platinum because of it. I took 25 hours to do a single playthrough. I collected every toy, codex, essence, etc only to get this dumb bug that won't count progression. Hope they patch it.

Haha I liked the morale fights. There was something satisfying about decimating their troops to the point that they were finally vulnerable.

Sucks about the trophy, I didn’t realize how widespread it was. Thankful I avoided that somehow.

Finished the two nm runs. Might try pandemonium next or 120% speed.

Maybe I'm slow but I just realized on the last level that enemies with blue heads are buffed and the one with the flagpole is the buff totem. Can't believe I never put the two together.

Yeah, they design some cool "combat puzzles" around that system where a bunch of buffed enemies are lined up in front of you and the flag guy ("Enforcer") is cowering near the very back. If you can just speed past the buffed guys and quickly nuke the Enforcer, the battle instantly becomes far easier. It seems Enforcers are only slightly stronger than regular enemies, and so killing them is nowhere near as difficult as taking down "Leaders" or "Champions" (both of which are more like mini-bosses).

They really did a good job with them. Some of the buff totems aren't even in the same arena. Well at least one that I can remember.

In the belly of the beast mission where you drop down into the secret room with the poison pools and three waves of buffed heavies appear, the totem is a shielded soldier on the floor above and you don't see him until you finish the arena and teleport out. When I first saw him I thought what a useless enemy just standing here all by himself. He doesn't even attack you! Lol I had no idea.

Ok now I’m with you, I had no idea these things existed. I just figured you had to deal with random buffed enemies.

Haha right? I did ten runs of Eternal so I should have recognized the reskinned idea right away. You're supposed to kill the flagpole dudes to eliminate the buff.

I just started a new nm playthrough with Kaibz Mod that disables slowmo. The gameplay is so much faster and more responsive. Such a huge improvement.

For anyone on pc, it's just a simple dll file that you drop in the game installation folder. And the modder has previously made some popular mods for Wolfenstein and Eternal so he knows the idtech engine. The mod simply changes some console variables that are built into the game so it shouldn't take id long to officially patch in something similar.

They added all sorts of new spawns (and likely changed some pre-existing ones?) as part of this new update.

The Vagary Champion that you first encounter at the end of the fourth chapter, for example, now has two Mancubuses that constantly spawn on both sides of the arena. Before, you could just keep all of your attention on the Vagary, parrying its attacks until it was weakened and then lighting it up with your guns... rinse, repeat. Now it's a constant juggling act, because the two Mancubuses are flooding the entire arena with their projectiles, forcing you to try and deal with them and the Vagary at the same time... with very limited ammo, health, and armor. Suffice it to say, that boss is now much, much harder, especially on Nightmare.

That's just one of many examples. Can't really say I'm a fan of those sorts of updates for a singleplayer game. I wish they would leave that sort of stuff to the DLC level(s) and Master Levels.

Genuinely curious, is anyone still playing this game?

I haven’t touched it since playing the first mission the day after launch. I have barely had any time to play the last few weeks. What little time to game I have been playing Nightreign with my buddies. Hoping that once things slow down with work in mid July that I will be able to find more time to play.
