Multiplat DOOM: The Dark Ages

I definitely had several moments through the campaign where I couldn’t believe I wasn’t dead. I saw my health at 5 and could've sworn I got hit.
That's one hit protection, where you won't die to a hit as long as you have at least 30 HP. It will leave you with 5 HP instead and then you die to the next hit. Eternal has it too but it sounds like they took it out in this patch.

Without one hit protection this game might actually be harder. In Eternal only one enemy at a time could target you but in TDA there are always multiple projectiles coming from all over. I was dying like crazy in the abyssal forest last night and had no idea why. That change would explain it.

It appears many people aren't crazy about this game. I've been playing it in short bursts and think it's great. I really like how you can mix up the combat and the synergies between shield, melee, and weapon upgrades.

BTW I found this informative

Patiently waiting for a professional dragon rider to tell us if the fire breathing dragon riding sections of this game are realistic or not.

Did not like this at all.

Tried it on gamespass and honestly hated it! I made it to mission 8 or 9 and straight up dropped it and uninstalled. Just doesnt feel good at all.

Game sold less than a million copieszzz

I ended up not buying it yet because I still have to finish Eternal DLC. Part 2 on TAG is horrible compared to part 1.

You have to use your fucking meat hook to platform and fly around

Anyways I’ll get this at like 39.99 eventually

How did you feel about 2016 and Eternal?

Was curious to see what Civvie would say on it. He’s not a huge fan of Eternal and absolutely loved this.

That’s really bad for a game like this. Never would have I imagined Expedition 33, a jrpg inspired game from an unknown studio would sell millions of more copies than a well established franchise. Both were on Gamepass too so they can’t even use that excuse. I wonder what the hell happened.

Great word of mouth and a discounted title.

Opinions are all over the place on this, likely leading to a lot of wait and see.

I’m sure Microsoft isn’t disappointed that they have 2 million players engaging through Game Pass alone.

Thats dependent on the amount of new Gamepass subscribers Dark Ages generated and their retention as subscribers.

Trying to avoid spoilers but I fully intend on getting this game once I upgrade my rig. Some youtube videos seem to indicate that my setup would be able to run this maxed out at 1440p around 80-90.

Honestly I really do think one of the reasons why the PC version isn't selling is because people aren't able to get their hands on NVidia cards at an even remotely decent price. I can't be the only one who's in this situation. That, combined with the fact that I am hopelessly enamored with Clair Obscure, makes me wait.

But I have a hard time believing that the same devs who made D2016 and Doom Eternal made a bomber. Judging from most of the opinions here it's amazing. People might have been turned off by the parrying thing. I love the notion personally. The visuals look incredible. My only worry is the fact that Mick Gordon isn't doing the OST which is a serious bummer. I'll pick this up soon.

I honestly would expect more players then that. 2 million out of a service that has 30+ million? Seems low. With that said there's been a shit load of games coming out and on top of that a lot of them on GP as well. I could see this game having legs as people finish up the other games they are playing and then move on to this.

In a week? That’s pretty impressive turnout.

Doom really isn’t as massive as people seem to think. Of course it’s a legendary franchise but that doesn’t mean tons of people are playing these games. It’s a single player shooter known for being pretty punishing.

For perspective, it took 2016 a year to break 3M copies.

Well I guess I just thought Doom was bigger but looking at sales looks like you're right it's not that big. Honestly reading the sales of E33 and Doom really makes me wonder WTH is goin going on over at Square. FF16 sold 3 mil in like a week on one system and it was under their highest estimates. Like how big do they really think these FF games are? They need to tone down their marketing or get their dev cost under control.

The game is definitely losing steam and the inital hype is wearing off. Just look at speedrunners. They haven't even agreed on basic categories yet and the number of people running it has dropped noticeably. Some have already gone back to Eternal.

I think part of the problem is the skill ceiling just isn't that high with TDA. Once you figure out the mechanics the gameplay loop becomes pretty repetitive. If you watch the top players it's just shoot throw shoot throw with the occasional shield charge. Not much interesting tech to learn or skills to master. And the game is long so it requires a large time commitment which hurts its replay value.

That said I'm still having fun. Started a third character to use all the shit weapons I haven't tried so far. So now I have two nm playthroughs about halfway done and will just alternate between them to see how different the weapons play.

Enjoyed them both! Finished both on the hardest difficulty (pretty sure its ultra violence?) which was a huge grind as some levels were fucking HARD. But never burnt out on either game and ended up knocking them off.

I was not following the development of this game at all but it didnt even really feel like Doom. If someone sat me down to play it and didnt tell me it was Doom and assuming I didnt recognise the Demons it could of been anything.

Plus the sound fucking sucked. Not just talking about the mad guitar riffs the game is known for I mean the actual sound effects of the demons and guns etc.

Obviously its not for me and I have uninstalled and moved on, didnt cost me anything as I have gamespass so Im not salty or anything.

Doom DA was alright but just felt off, everything from the frantic pace, the punishment, and the music (the biggest L of all). I didn't expect an Eternal type return but it just wasn't as exciting to play. I did like some of the enemy changes they made and the shield was helpful with my play style.

I can't even buy it as my video card is too old to utilize the forced Ray Tracing. I've been wanting to upgrade for a while, but I've had a lot of diy projects that have taken up too much time and money.
The forced Ray Tracing wasn't the best idea.
