Colombian President Gustavo Petro swiftly backtracked on his refusal to accept deportation flights from the United States after President Donald Trump threatened tariffs and other measures.

The White House confirmed on Sunday that Colombia's president had caved "to all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the United States, including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay."

Why it's significant?

A lot had been made about Trump's tarriff threats in the past month. People (like me) who understand negotiations have tried to explain this is a negotiating tactic and this is an example of that tactic in action.

Even CNN admits Trump backed the Colombian President down.

CNN —
Donald Trump claimed an early victory for a coercive foreign policy based on tariffs and hard power on Sunday after announcing Colombia had backed down in a dispute over migrant repatriation flights.

The president had earlier unveiled swift and painful punishment, including huge tariffs, on the US ally in his most overt attempt yet to make an example of a nation that crossed him and to assert dominance in the Western Hemisphere.

Of course they try to spin it like getting your way is a bad thing lmao

Bros,

It’s Columbia…

Let me know when a real Power bends the knee.
OK. Will do. Post marked for later date.
Gonna be a few more of these little wins against smaller powers that can’t do shit.

Trump is gonna pad up his record with a bunch of these little fights, prize fight style.

Let me know when he takes on a real Power who has the finances to play his game for good amount of time and we will see what his gas tank looks like..

Jesus tits you trumpers are mentally handicapped...seriously did you have any male figures in your life that you idolize that fat piece of shit...so god damned cringe inducing

Trumps tariff strong arming is a one trick pony and will only work with nations that have no other recourse in the short term...what do you think is going to happen with Colombia in the mid to long term....

That being said Colombia should have taken its citizens back no questions asked....refusing them was dumb.

Ngl, I'm convinced none of this 25%-50% tariff increase stuff will happen unless I see it actually happen. It screams unrealistic to me and seems like a negotiation tactic. Mexico and Canada were supposed to get these Day 1, now supposed to be February 1st. Watch something "happens" before then and nothing actually gets put out.

Name a country that has recourse against America.

I mostly agree with this. His unpredictability helps with this kind of tactic, I imagine. I don’t like the idea of strong arming our allies with (probably) empty threats, but when it comes to Mexico or Columbia, meh, I don’t care.

It is a negotiating tactic and both Canada and Mexico capitulated. Speaker Johnson though said the house is totally on board if needed tho.

But the Mexican president who said she wouldn’t do remain in Mexico quickly turned around and agreed, as well as broke up a few migrant caravans already.

Canada did agree to enforce their border better too and crack down on drugs and such at the border, before Trudeau announced his resignation and the finance minister leaving.

so the something “happening” already happened.
