Seems like the best-case scenario here is that his campaign manager, son, son-in-law, and several campaign advisers were meeting with the Russian gov't about trading policy concessions for illegal campaign help, and Trump didn't know about it, and then tried to stop an investigation into it and shield Russia from any consequences. And Republicans are perfectly OK with this.
