Don’t forget, Anthony Smith is actually OK with being a gatekeeper…

Does bro not realize Neil Magny is a better fighter than him? And Neil has come back to win many fights after getting pummeled early. 'Kittenheart' has rolled into a ball and quit many times.

I donno. He's endured some really terrible punishment.

Excellent thread. One of a kind!
Thanks sherbro. Too many threads these days are basically a re-tweet. Nothing quite like finding a decade old interview where a fighter hilariously contradicts himself. Your support means a lot.

I mean. The vast majority of UFC fighters are gatekeepers. Anyone who isn't a champ is a gatekeeper
There's always been spirited discussion about this. I found this thread quite informative:

I like the suggested hierarchy of champ, contender, and gatekeeper. I tend to think that a fighter can be all 3 of these over the course of a long career, or at least 2. One failed title shot shouldn't mean that you're forever exempt from gatekeeper status. It's all subjective though, like most things in MMA.

anthony smith should have taken the dq win against jon jones.

he would have probably wouldhave made as much or more money in the rematch then he has with all his fights afterwards combined.

He would gotten destroyed in the rematch, given 1-2 unfavorable match ups and then cut. He would not gotten a commentator role or had a podcast

lol he is talking like Neil Magny is a can. What a joke Smith is.. he has such a big ego and inflated opinion of himself. He does much worse than he realizes!!

He got his ass whooped so many times at WW, MW and LHW, he isn't as good as he thinks. Magny would most likely beat him at WW as well, lets not forget Smith was WW in the past and was not impressive in the slightest

Still not sure how he made it to the booth. I don't mind his commentary at all, but the selection seems a bit arbitrary. You have DC, Ping, and Cruz, all former champs. And then on the other hand, Jouban, Din, Cheesa, and Smitty. I can't really see a common thread. At least Joe-ban is handsome as all get out.

He showed integrity why would anyone hold that against him ?
Exactly. Imagine being 65 with CTE and the highlight of it all was a DQ “victory”

The average Sherdogger is a prostitute for money and success so much that they would gratefully get knocked out brutally and humiliated for money. It's sad that there's little integrity.

Magny never fought for the title. Or having a chance at fighting for the title. If you look at his wins, many of them are guys outside top 15. He never fought a champion in his prime or a champion material. He lost to RDA, Maia, Shavkat, Garry. Beating out of their prime Condit and Lawler doesn't mean much. Li, Gastelum, Neal are good wins.

Smith losses are Rakic, Glover, Jones, Ankalaev, Santos. Big names.
Walker and Rountree are not that big, but still, good fighters.

Not sure what makes it a "Bizzare Tradition". Tons of other UFC fighters bash the fuck out of other fighters. Nate, Conor, Colby, Costa, Chito, Henry... I could keep going.
Typically to promote their own brand. Smith has no reason to diss Magny. He's not selling a fight.

I don't think he should have done it myself but tons of fighters do it. Mostly against opponents of potential opponents but sadly Colby has shown shit talking anyone for attention works. Look at all of us talking about Smith.

Colby is playing a character to promote himself, Smith isn't.

I don't particularly believe Colby is playing a character that is not what he truly is as a person. He is much more playing a "Character" when he is acting polite and courteous and "Thank you for your service" etc.

Its takes a true selfish, narcissist POS to do the stuff he has done when "In Character". Colby's true character has shown itself.
