Does Usman still have time surpassing GSP?

I'm a Matt Hughes fan as much as the next lifelong MMA fan. But come on... Anyone he beat during his reign other than a green GSP would be demolished by both a prime GSP and Usman. His defenses are nowhere near as impressive as either of them. And GSP dominated him twice.
You have to look at relative competition. You can't compare the competition people fought in the 90s to now, nor can you compare the infant WW division Hughes fought in to today. At the time, Newton, Sakurai, Sherk, etc. were very good fighters.

Usman is really damn good. I'd put him right now as a solid #3 all time WW. If he were to get the belt back and have a last little surge to close out his career, obviously that would help his standing.

Nah. Especially not if Chimaev stays at WW.

Those guys skillsets all could easily hang today too. Main thing is they'd likely have to drop a weight class with the advancements in weight cutting which has been the biggest change in MMA at the top level over recent years. The depth of MMA talent always gets better but at the absolute top there hasn't been a whole lot of change. 2 of Kamaru's title defenses were against Jorge who wasn't far removed from the time frame of some of Hughes wins lol. BJ and GSP are given but no point in even arguing with anyone who questions the quality of a Mach, Newton or Sherk.

You look at someone like Merab Dvalishvili... He is #2 right now in what's widely considered the deepest division in MMA. And he doesn't do a damn thing better or differently than a prime Sean Sherk. If anything he's worse since Sean had better striking, more power and was a better sub grappler and finisher. Merab is tough as hell with ridiculous cardio and pushes a grinding pace but his skillset is incredibly lacking in alot of areas. It's a complete myth that every fighter is so complete now there are plenty of guys that are subpar or bad in some aspects that are still top fighters in 2022 even past the specialists. Even if you just look at WW Belal Muhammad is ranked #4 now lol... And I like Belal but his skillset is just.... ordinary, basic.

Castillo might not be one of Hughes top 10 best wins and he's beaten the likes of Nate Marquardt. Trigg has some really good wins and performances in his prime as well. Not even getting into Hughes post prime wins like Lytle, Serra and Almeida. I mean Ricardo absolutely dominated TJ Grant right after their fight and TJ had just gone to a close MD with Johny Hendricks and didn't lose again until his premature retirement. Almeida beat Grant so bad he dropped down to LW for the first time lol.

Hughes is on the short list of GOAT MMA grapplers. Some of the best GNP ever. Incredible submission game that still holds up, reversals, transitions, top control. Ridiculous conditioning and his striking was underrated too had some deceptive power as well.

Usman doesn't really have a case over Hughes. Kamaru reigned over a weak era of WW. Alot of WWs in their late 30s and a bunch of bloated LWs (RDA, Jorge, Burns, Chiesa, Yancy, Nate, Pettis etc) got ranked at WW during Kamaru's era most of em getting top 5 rankings, being contenders and even fought for the title.

I believe Leon will win their rematch. So no, his days as champion is over.

Hard question. Usman had a different road to the belt. I'll just enjoy the ride for now. GSP is still the WW goat but Usmans road isn't over yet.

Wouldn’t matter if khazmat fights at 170. Khamzat can likely beat Usman and GSP in a 2 on 1 fight too

He has to pass Matt Hughes first which he hasnt

Its too late for Kamaru. Considering Khamzats issues with making weight I dont see him at 170 for that much longer so Shavkat is probably the only real other guy that can conceivably reach that level.
+1

People forget Hughes won 9 UFC title bouts + 2 non title bouts as champ. He ruled 170 for about 6 years before GSP came around and even picked GSP off in their first match.

No. He was overhyped just like so many other UFC champions.

If y’all would stop buying into the UFC hype machine and just enjoy the fights for 5 minutes, instead of running your stupid mouths about “muh GOAT”, it’d sure make things a lot easier around here.

Every fighter who won his most recent fight is da goat bruh, or on his way to being da goat bruh, while every fighter who lost his last fight has been exposed for the bum he always was.

Its about ur opponents too. Usmans biggest mark was fighting jorge twice for his defenses. Usmans best win was colby, thats it, compared to who gsp best in his time, its not close tbh.

ufc and mma fans have very short memories, a champ wins 2-3 times and suddenly people start thrusting them into goat talks. Remember woodley being talked like the 2nd greatest wa ever? Look where we are now, hes not even top 3 and nobody mentions him.

the only good wins in that list is gsp and penn, maybe sakurai
That’s because gsp stopped them, if he wasn’t in that division they would have had a lot more accomplishments. That’s the problem with being a dominant champ everyone u eventually fight is considered a bum. Light heavyweight was considered weak because Jon Jones was so much above everyone he made them look bad. If he wasn’t in the picture there would have been like 5 guys all great passing the belt back and forth and having close fights

now that he lost, if he gains his belt back, how many more title defense does he need to accumulate.

granted he beaten some powerful opponents

do you see gsp getting knocked out by leon edwards like that? I sure don't

Snoozeman already surpassed gsp as the most boring ufc fighter at WW. Gsp had a huge grip on that playing it safe and no stoppages after 5'1 Sera. Snoozeman took that title.
