Does this exercise have a name? And what muscles would it target specifically?

I'm working on bulking up my shoulders, and yesterday during my workout I was doing shoulder shrugs holding the barbell behind my back. I had a thought that might be useful for targeting shoulders, or it might be stupid and cause injury. Hence, this thread.

So if you're holding the barbell behind your butt like you would for shoulder shrugs, what if you raised it up like an upright row, from that position? Wouldn't that target your shoulders and upper chest? Would it hit the rear delts or more the front delts? Would it cause injury or be a waste of time?

Advise me
 
Oh for the other shoulder movements in my routine, I'm doing lots of heavy bent over rows, upright rows, behind the neck military presses, jack-knife pushups, standing dumbbell flys to the sides, front and bent over for the rear delt, and shrugs.

Shoulders are showing improvement but I want more. Moar gains
 
Nevermind I found it. Behind the back upright rows. Apparently Lee Haney made them famous and he said it's the ONLY thing he ever did for his traps. Looking forward to trying this out.

 
Speaking as a Bro, if you want to blast your shoulders then looking to hit them at different angles is a good idea but why over complicate it?

I usually go with SOHP as my primary movement, then Lateral raises.. if I'm feeling particularly sexy that day I'll superset those badboys with some front raises and rear delts making teh womenz melt.
Don't touch upright row's for the hoes because I can't be bothered with them.

Pay particular attention to your rear delts.. 3D delts making the bitches squelch.

So basically a behind the back shrugs?

Traps, and probably rear delts.
 
OP, unless you have world class shoulders currently, you will get the best results just pressing weight overhead to build shoulder muscle and then getting lean to show off that muscle.

Yes, but try doing the motion, and nothing other than traps, rear delt gets contracted (worked).

Overall back to your OP, I think if you want gains, up the volume

Brah, do regular shrugs, and deadlifts and cleans. also sprinkle in some rear delt flys.
