Does Sean Strickland Deserve this title shot?

Do you really think Sean is popular?
Somewhat but him and his fans overrate his popularity. He's nowhere near as popular as Rousey or Mcgregor and with his boring style he'll never hit that level of fame. Even the right wing media doesn't seem cover him as much as they used to.

Khamzat clearly deserves the next title shot, but if there's a good reason for him not to get it then Strickland isn't a bad choice. Still not a great choice - it takes more than beating The Lost Beach Boy, Paulo Costa, in a boring decision to actually earn your way back to a title shot - but someone needs to get the fight.

I think there is going to be a problem of people arguing he  does deserve it, and that alone becomes enough for them to be ok with this because they're Strickland fans (for some fucking reason) or hate Khamzat, but the truth is, Khamzat should have been plugged into this title fight, period

Wouldn't mind a poll for this one if a moderator could a simple Yes/No Poll that would be nice.

So the Question is in the thread title. Just going to go over some quick facts for those on the edge

Reasons why he deserves it:

- Dominated izzy in a non competitive fight
- His fight with Dricus was a very close loss
- He rebounded with a win against Costa
- He's been around a long while and has generally paid his dues (short notice fights, Stays active, Never ducking anyone)

Reasons why he doesn't deserve it:

- Never really earned his first title fight, was given it strictly via circumstances
- There is another viable contender in Khamzat who has strong momentum and a win over whittaker (which strickland has not fought)
- 4-3 in his last 7
- Only finish in over 4 years has no wikipedia page

I can't lie, I want Khamzat vs DDP the most right now, but I'm a fan of Sean's, wish him the best. My arguments for him would be:

DDP vs him is unfinished business.

Without Sean, we'd probably never get Alex in the TOP 5 of MW, much less him at LHW. Or it would've taken an eternity. Everyone was ducking AP bigly. And he's actually one of the few names who did come back and fight hard fights ASAP after a loss. Got clocked by Alex, but returned vs Cannonier. Got beat by DDP, but immediately came back against Costa. Basically, Whittaker and Sean are two the most game guys who just kept plowing forward no matter what. And I wanna reward that.

MW is a very decision heavy division in general, so I don't hold a lack of finishes against him, specifically. People saying Sean sat out when he's been so active and already fought twice this year also is kinda bizarre.

Yeah and he just had to watch Izzy, who he just beat and who was sitting out, fight for the title.

Would prefer Dricus vs Khamzat but Sean’s a former champ and the first fight with Dricus was real close. If Dricus wants to fight he shouldn’t have to wait on Khamzat so I think it makes sense.

Thinking this might be a favor for Trump and I think Colby vs Leon was the same thing. Just throwing that out there. I've got zero proof and they have done bad title shots for a long time, but still makes sense.

Who else has a victory over Adesanya and a split decision loss to DDP?

Gross
GTFOH with your horrible fucking takes.

Close fights and one right after losing the belt. Honestly I can see the argument against him but who else is it going to be that can fight outside if Dubai

It will be trivial for Dana White to get permission for Khamzat to fight in the U.S. as of January 20, 2025.

They were both in line for it. Fact is Khamzat has been an unreliable dance partner, not surprised he didn't get first cracks. Let him be healthy and ready when his shot comes this year.

It's debatable whether Khamzat or Strickland deserved it more. But I don't think sitting out for a title shot should be rewarded.

Seeing the the likes of Colby and Sean get rewarded for this is only going to encourage others to do the same.

Deserves, I'm not sure but he did make a lot of fans in Australia last time and so did DDP for that matter so this fight makes a lot of sense.

Whoever wins, they will be rewarded with the Chimaev fight.

I won't say yes or no just that I was disappointed he didn't take the fight as Co Main against Rob at UFC 305 in Austrailia. It should have been a 5 round fight for the Official #1 contender and next out of the winner. Instead he just sat and cried while calling people women and staying myriad other stupid shit in an attempt to compete with Bryce Mitchell for dumbest UFC fighter.

No, but Dana White loves to have him on the mic pandering to the lowest common denominators in society.

I don't think anyone is looking forward to a 25 minute spreadsheet sparring session where nothing happens and he claims he won because he tapped his opponent a million times or whatever.

No he best Costa. Not good enough.
