Does Liddell overextend?

Regardless, he wasn't the best because of his stellar form. He was the best (and is one of the best in MMA) because of his power, tenacity and stone chin. His looping hooks probably make most boxing coaches cringe. He shouldn't be used as a model for your standup game because Chuck's the only guy in the world who's Chuck. His style works for him. Classical boxing/Thai punching form works better for most people.

if he used classical boxing/thai punching form in mma he'd get slammed by good wrestlers all the time
you can't use ANY mma artists to show you how to stand up, but the stance is good for a real life situation

you guys are missing chuck's motives. i'm sure he could train jiu jitsu with top guys in the world and start subbing people and taking them down and all that. he was a good wrestler as most know. he's throwing hard and dropping bombs for the bloodthirsty entertainment factor. he feel's he's the ufc's golden boy right now and he's trying to make his fights exciting to hook more people into mma. joe dirt doesnt know squat about the guard but a flying ktfo sure as hell gets his pussy wet.

practicality? hell yeah. his style works for him and that's obvious. his style works pretty damn well for the guys in his gym too. everyone who has trained with some of his guys damn sure remember it, but that's a combination of his schooling and their own athleticism. has he lost fights? yes, but he's lost and won against top guys. you're not going to win them all in any case.

he's good at what he does and every style or techinque has a counter. if you dont like how chuck throws, dont do it. if you dont like the traditional fall back armbar from mount--because if you miss, you lose potion--then dont do it, but a lot of people will be winning fights with either technique.

I don't think anyone was dogging Chuck. How could you? He KOs mofos. Just doesn't look orthodox doing it.

chuck's striking tech/approach is based off the idea of him having exceptional power/heart and physical durability...

it's not textbook..but it plays to what he does well, same as rocky marciano...same as roy jones jr; he has a strategy, he backs up draws u in and counters u w/a big shot...or he applies pressure on u, getting u to punch 1st, he counters u and kos u...

if ur backing up from chuck u can't generate any power or eff off in regards to combinations, cus u are on ur back foot...u can't shoot or eff close the dist cus u backing up and u out of range and come lunging in...leaving u open for counters.. look at babalu..or randleman..or couture two.

now if u have a JAB which most mma guys don't, the discipline to stay in the pocket and work through it to tie him up and take him down or land a series of punches..then u will be fine. But unlike randy..most guys don't have a jab and don't have the discipline or toughness to stay in the pocket to counter or land; secondly they don't have the discipline to stay sharp and measured w/their strikes, instead they get wild sloppy over agrressive and get koed... ex couture v liddel 2

He sacrifices balance for more power...
mirko also sacrifices his guard when doing lhk, but if the punch/kick is fast enough it doesnt matter.

A lot of boxing/ muay thai guys give Fedor and Igor Vov shit about their wild, looping swings all the time, same with Chuck, in MMA this stand up style works. Prehaps the fact that these guys are good grapplers and do not fear being taken down/attempted to be taken down makes them really 'swing from the fences'.
That and they have good chins and loads of power!

Then you need to read the thread.

Well, i think most of the people in this thread got it right. His style is unorthodox but it works for him. And like any style it has its advantages and disadvantages.

What's funny is that many top fighters (or ex) who are unorthodox are actually the hardest hitters.(chuck, igor, fedor)
