Does anyone know what the hell Joe is talking about?

Well, just allow the eye pokes then. In a fight, someone would try to poke the other in the eye for sure. Make it so everyone can use. That will make the fighters more prepared, since they'll have to take the eyes into consideration and will have to improve in a way they can protect their weak parts. Like the nuts, too. In real fight, they could be kicked... So they need to know when to use and to defend from it. Like how fighters can stop the fighter from raining them elbows in the g&p with good wrist and posture control, they would evolve to defend all their weaknesses...

Btw, did the old gloves diminish a little the impact from getting punched or not? Because I had heard ppl talking about the golden gloves being considerably more stuffed, so the impact was less intense...

The legendary UFC commentator believes there’s a simple solution that would drastically reduce the number of fight-impacting eye pokes.

“I keep saying it, but I feel they should cover those fingertips,” Rogan said on his podcast in September.

“You’ve got to cover the fingers. There’s no reason to not cover the fingers like a bad glove.

“Just have a piece of leather that goes over the fingertips, so you have one thing. It’s not gonna invade your grappling, and it’s not gonna change your striking. It’s not going to change anything.

“This way, at least if you get poked in the eye you are getting a blunt thing, you are not getting something that goes into your eyeball.

“Have them all covered and have a soft-foamed ridge over the top of it. So even if you are getting poked in the eyes, you are not getting an individual thing going deep into your eyeball with an eyeball, which is what you get now. You get f—— fingernails!”

A piece of leather over the fingertips? A soft-foamed ridge? No impact on striking or grappling? Has anyone seen a prototype of this new 'glove' or is it just his own really stoned thoughts?
You must be new. Pride Styled Gloves, or like he said.. Bag Gloves. Both have finger pockets. We tend to use bag gloves when mixing grappling and striking in sparring.. and both have been around for decades.

He is talking about bag gloves; similar to these. There are better versions, but I cannot find an image. There were used a lot in the 1980s karate scene.

No he's not.. those aren't the style of bag gloves he's referring to, nor are they the style used in typical mma gyms.

Joe probably thinks of something like mma training gloves. The idea is that the 4 fingers are covered by a single piece so one finger cannot get into an eye socket. That makes sense.

There are plenty of reasons to open your hands that can lead to an eye poke. Like whe you try to grab the wrist, to get in a thai clinch, to parry a punch or to post with your palm.

Also the current gloves make things worse because they block the wrist and finger extensions.
The refs always say to the figters to keep their fingers pointed upward if their hands are open. But the gloves make it very difficult.
Whos out there poking people in the eyes while getting in the Thai clinch?

Fights are messy and uncontrolled by nature, anytime you have open hands going towards an opponent, there is a chance for a finger to end in an eye socket.

Some styles are much more likely to poke, especially the tall fighters who fight at range and post defensively: Jones, Gane, Leon, Imavov, Adesanya, O'Malley.
