Does anyone here still watch poker on TV?

I suppose no poker thread would be complete without a mention of Rounders. Hell of a movie.

Someone give me three stacks of high society.

I watched that movie so many times and each time I keep wishing Mike himself kicked Worm's ass. Damn near everyone in the film whipped Worm's ass anyway

Just the impression I get is that it's still more popular now than it was before the boom, but pretty much everyone who is still into it are fairly hardcore about it. I'm not sure how many casual poker fans there are now.

Yep, definitely more popular now the pre-boom. I'm assuming regulations are what hurt it bad but I'm sure it would have eventually cooled off either way. I know a lot of people simply stop playing since so many local games dried up. 10 years ago even local bars would be advertising poker to drum up business on a weekday.

I still like to watch it bout as much as I ever did.

The main event might be my least favorite to watch though.

I'm retired so I watch every now and then. I like how poker expert, Mike Sexton is usually out pretty early in the tournament. People are always playing the odds until they run out of money and are forced to play hands they normally wouldn't because they have nothing to lose and often succeed. I think the guy who was the short stack on the final table on a recent tournament came back to win it all. Newcomers often make the final table because nobody knows how they play.

My desire to watch poker died with the ban on online cash games.

My problem with watching it is that now everyone is good at poker. During the boom, there were a few megastars who would steamroll everyone before meeting late in the tournament

It was like in PRIDE, when the stars would crush a bunch of cans and then have a final showdown of Demi-gods

Now I feel like there's just a bunch of random people who got good playing online, and I won't see again next year

I can't imagine watching anything any more mind numbingly boring then watching poker on TV. I think that I would rather watch the religious channel and thats pretty bad on its own. The entire nature of poker doesn't lend it to itself to be boring. To be good at poker you can't show any emotions, so watching a bunch of guys sitting around doing as little as possible and wearing sunglasses and baseball caps indoors is the very definition of terrible TV.

There are much more brain-dead fish around but 90%+ of players are still bad. Maybe not "throw money at you" bad but bad in other ways. The players who stuck around after it became hard to get money on and off sites became tight and aggressive.

However, they are bad tight and aggressive. The really good players make a lot of money off them.

The trend of random, weak players at the final table has to do with the playing field increasing, not everyone getting good. No matter how good of a tournament player you are, the more people in the tournament means your chances of final tabling decrease.

The boom started with Moneymaker. To this day, Moneymaker is still bad.

Never watched it other than the last few minutes waiting on whatever I was tuning into ESPN2 for

Yeah during the boom I could make a couple hundred a week casually playing. I'm not that good myself either. I played for a bit last year and got rekt. Seems like less fish swimming around now.

i still love watching poker. it's real drama, and that's why i watch. i don't play poker, and have no desire to, but i love watching. whenever i'm bored, i'll look up videos of tony g., phil ivey, daniel negreanu, etc. in the recent w.s.o.p., it was awesome watching will kassouf. it was hilarious watching him play.

in my opinion, what hurt the entertainment in watching poker was the new strict rules on talking about hands. back in it's heyday, the speech-play would be really fun to watch for the viewer. the new way of playing is everyone keeping quiet and playing in a very sterile way. it's not good for the audience.

I love watching WPT...also love poker after dark, which features most of the legends, and even had Hendo and Buffer on an episode haha...

Speaking of Daniel Negreanu, I've haven't watched it yet but a new documentary about him recently hit Netflix. . .

And since we're talkinga bout poker docs, apparently this one came out in 2012:
