I don't think games have plateaued, but the old guard have stagnated, making it look that way.

So much is played so safe and generic, especially in the west, as they try to make games as inoffensive and inclusive as possible, many being soulless. The MT's and and unoptimized launches don't help either.

There are outliers, but bless the Indies/AA/Asian devs.

Creative ppl know the answer to this , I remember back in the early 90”s someone telling me how movies are going to stop being a thing soon bc ideas are running out and I laughed at him .

Video games is even a wider medium so it’ll never plateau.

There will always be downtimes, but things will eventually pick up again. A lot of pop culture has been kind of dog dick since Obama's second term (timeline wise not a "thanks Obama" complaint), but videogames had a worse crash before and came back.

the 90s was awesome compared to the 10s when superhero franchises dominated the discourse among quote unquote normies.

I think in terms of reliability and frequency of new releases no I don’t think we’ll ever get back to the ps3 levels of things.

I think micro transactions really delayed and put a damper on gaming quality. But the high end releases such as Elden ring, rdr 2, and truly industry defining games are reaching levels that 100% weren’t possible before.

So I guess it depends how you define the enjoyability of gaming. Are you a variety gamer who loves dumping 20-40 hours into 100’s of games? Or are you the type that loves putting 500+ hours into select games?

For me personally I look at older eras with nostalgia but enjoy gaming more now than I did in the past.

Saw this clip and was reminded of this thread -

What causes games to 'plateau' is big developers having distain for the intelligence of their customer base and having a standard of mediocrity.

And can you blame them? CoD was the biggest selling releases every year for the past decade and a half plus.

But thankfully over the last few years the tide has been turning. Major releases have been underselling to flopping hard.

The message has been sent to major publishers : We don't want more Dragon Age Non-Binary, Assassins Creed Black samurai, or Starfield of Emptiness.

We want more of titles of a quality like Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, & Cyberpunk2077.

And hopefully we won't accept anything less, speaking broadly.
