Do you think this situation is worth it?

A group composed of myself and two of my best buds want to get into Brazilian Jujitsu. The problem is that we don't have a place in the city that we live in, and the closest is about an hour away, all highway. We would pool of course, and the fee is 90$ per month. With lessons twice a week for 1 hour, and then an hour and a half open mat. And the times are very conveinent as well.

Would you go to these lengths to practice it?

I think it would be worth it if everyone sticks at it. I live in an area where it isn't uncommon for people to commute 2 hours to work. I guess it just depends on how you feel about the quality of the training and how much fun you are having. $90 doesn't sound bad, but that is all relative.

i drive a gas guzzling SUV, drive all by myself and drive 40mins each way... and yes it is hurting my wallet... i am downgrading to a hybrid vehicle

Yea, I figured if everyone loved it then the trip would be no problem.

is there a submission wrestling or MMA gym closer? as long as you all commit to it sounds good

I know it was said earlier, but I would do it because I like it so much. Just be sure to ask yourself if you can afford to go if all your friends decide it is not what they want to do.

I've decided I'm going to make sure I have all the details down and make sure everything financially will work out and then make my decision. I'm excited for it!

also what if you don't want to do it anymore, do your freinds have other transport same thing for injuries... i am sure you don't wanna do the hour drive if you are injured and can't train?

I think so. The gym I am gonna be training at soon is about an hour away, as it's about the closest MMA gym could find to where I live now. It's not that bad of a drive. I know people who drive that far... and further!! each day for work.

Are you absolutely sure theres no BJJ in the area? What aboutt Judo?

i would make the drive. i have made close to the same drive in the past, but i really like jiu-jistu.
hell, i have even pass up jobs for more money because i don't want to leave Oklahoma. i have good training here and it is important to me.

I do go to those lengths to practice, same conditions. Only I don't have any buddies that train with me to split the gas money. Some people go through much more to train.

I commute a lot more than an hour to get there for some classes, imagine if you asked a great bjj fighter the same question, what would he say?

go for it! i did the same thing in illinois. drove close to 45 mins sometimes by myself. as long as you enjoy jiu jitsu, the sacrifice should be worth it.

I used to drive 3 hours every weekend (I would stay with a bud from the military over the weekend to train Fri,Sat, Sun) and then drive back 3 hours every sun.

I did that for a year straight. So your situation does not sound too bad to me.

i used to take a bus and two subways for 2 hours one way to train jiu jitsu... just a thought.

alot of guys at my school drive an hour or more 3+ days a week. 90 bucks a month sounds like a steal too...

I used to walk 15 miles in the snow with only newspapers wrapped around my feet to train.... lol j/k
