Do you think it's okay to publish this picture on the front page of one of the world's most famous sports magazines?

Arguably the most famous sports picture of all time is not very flattering to Sonny Liston. Sometimes the best pictures in competition are of the point of victory/defeat.

OP about to come come complain the photo is overexposed and makes them look more white

I read your posts and you say very good things and even now. I suspect that a country as large as the United States and your short history, you have managed it very well actually, you know that thing with assimilation that we in Europe have a very hard time getting started and into the minds of those who seek to come here from completely opposite cultures to ours.

I don't know how you feel in the US and with children's books, but here we got a false start from when we were little and looked at picture books. That chimpanzees illustrated in trees doesn't rhyme very well with reality, does it? They usually live on the ground. I think that some people simply haven't come out of that indoctrination and we see examples of that in ugly scenes in some stadiums in Spain, Italy, Poland and Israel. Some very racist types who separate people by skin color have drawn chimpanzees and gorillas in trees eating bananas and then these sub-humans make monkey noises and throw bananas down to the players of the wrong color. I also can't imagine that something like that could happen in the US. Imagine Superbowl and bananas.... Impossible.

But for the rest of us who are a little right and maybe a bit conservative and like to preserve historical things and traditions, we get a lot of heat as I think it's too easy to call us racist just because a curiosity can only mean one thing. Namely racism. I´m surprised to see some of those who call themselves right wing and vote republican also shout racism. I´m used to the left doing it, but as you said, we Europeans may have a different mindset than you Americans when to talk frankly about things that might be considered sensitive.

Cheers!

I'm in Canada, but close enough <2>

The culture in Europe definitely seems different. Like you've got real Nazis meanwhile in North America it's mostly a boogeyman, not a serious threat by any means. Europe seemingly has more extremes and more inter-group hostility. It's not like there's no hostility here, but it's mostly blown out of proportion by the media. In my daily life I never encounter it.

99% of people ITT gave you shit TS but I am with you and this has been an interesting experiment for sure. Unless of course this is ban bait and I am the 1% that fell for it ( in which case you are a very astute troll, respect). But TBH my reaction was so genuine that if I get banned for it then so be it. Not a wrinkle on my pocket.

Bro, agree this is an interesting thought experiment. I'll tread carefully because I don't want this thread to be deleted, but I'll explain my thought process. OP is not asking what the featured player looks like, he's asking whether SI was correct to put this pic on the cover.

OP pic is what the featured player, Quinshon Judkins, looks like from that angle with a helmet on. Here are more pics of same dude:

Now I don't follow the sport and know jack about football, but this dude apparently broke college records and is leaving early to enter the NFL draft. And the OP pic is of him winning a D1 national championship for Ohio State a few weeks ago. It's a great action shot of him stuffing an opposing player from Notre Dame.

I would question the pic if it misrepresented what the dude looks like. For instance, "Hall of Famer Rashad Evans Wraps up Storied Career"

Or "UFC Legend Tony Ferguson signs with GFL"

But that doesn't apply because it's what homie looks like. Is it the most flattering pic of his face? No, but as I said in post #17, I don't see the issue. It's notable that dude is an Academic All American (requires 3.5+/4.0 GPA) so he can't be dumber than a box of rocks even if he's not majoring in Astrophysics. So props to this young man for being a star at what he does.

You think the guys face is racist? Would you prefer if he put on greasepaint to whiten up?

Couldn't they find another picture from that Nikon or Canon camera that took 15 to 20 almost exactly the same pictures of the same situation?

Doesn't the media have a responsibility not to publish less flattering images of human beings in a sports situation like this.

Are there more than me who can guess what is hiding under the helmet?

I only see a huge BBC

This all motherfucking day.

Came to say this and you done already put it in the perfect words so fuck it.
I'll just redirect.
Imagine you just exist and people are talking about how the way you look makes people think racist thoughts lol.

OP's next thread:

I saw a Chinese guy squinting in the sun. I can't believe he would show himself squinting in public in this racially divisive climate.

I met an Arab who told me he's muslim. Wow, I couldn't believe he would play into stereotypes.

I thought it was a monkey's face shooped inside the helmet.

Turns out that's just how the dude looks. What, are you going to ban pictures of him altogether?

Hello my friend.

I think you have a much too narrow way of thinking than what you normally write. In this thread, you have shown evidence of not trying to understand and think into how I reason. Instead you ridicule and call racist.

Now try to have a broader perspective and imagine that in the coming weeks, Sports Illustrated will be bombarded with emails from concerned readers wondering if the cover is photoshopped and someone has pasted in a chimpanzee face. Now let's say you are the editor in chief of this particular magazine. How do you want to react? Do you want to report the readers to the police for offensive comments, or do you want to try to understand the readers' thinking and why they saw the chimpanzee's face as the first thing.

Obviously, there are many people who see the chimpanzee. The picture is an action-packed one from American football. The image is not abstract and I asked an honest and straightforward question. It is not a picture where thoughts and creativity are allowed to appear as in the picture below. Can you guess what is hiding?

...
which is the entire reason for the TS starting this thread.

He wanted people to say what you said and maybe to add a bit overt racism to it, as well, as gravy.

The problem with that picture is YOU! you saw racism because either you are a racist or because you want to see racism to fuel a victim mentality or a Messiah complex.

Is this magazine cover in regards to the Buckeyes or the Pokeeyes?

If its the latter, it needs to have the likes of Chuck Liddell or Jon Jones on the cover.

I always knew his name was Tolkien Black idk why you people are saying Token... that's on you not me
