Do you think about death often?

Exactly why I think it's on my mind, that everything I ever wanted for us might be swept away for him being I have this stupid PALB2 gene which could fuck everything up.
I apologise, I'm maudlin. I think my mum going through it all when I was going through it has really fucked my head up mortality wise. I screamed my head off on a ride in Santa Cruz and could barely walk after getting off it when I used to adore rollercoasters, and he pretty much worked out that my brain changed,
We all change as we get older, not just physically but mentally as well, it's just unavoidable tat we won't be influenced by the negative stuff that happens to us. Shit happens, maybe go grab a nice glass of wine or a G&T :)

I am dead inside, so.

I think of it often but I think it'll be peaceful. I'm not worried per se I just think about it often. Several people I've known and cared about are dead, there's a certain weight to that.

Sometimes I think of a book where a samurai (Hagakure I believe, the book that is) says to think about dying in brutal, painful ways so as to inoculate yourself to the fear of death.

Lost 3 people close to me in 4 months plus two friends in the previous year . Also was present when my fully aware elderly relative decided to end it all via starvation and no fluids at his own home , it took 13 days ... forget that 3 or 4 day of no water and you die bullshit . It depends on how active you are and the temperature , humidity and general health . A nurse told me she knew someone who took 30 days to die without drinking or eating anything . You will go into a coma after a period of time again it depends on various factors but several days is common . My relative was fully aware and mentally sharp up until around day 7 or 8 then went into a coma for another 5 days or so , age 91 weight of 118 lbs after his last meal when his normal weight at age 80 was around 175 lbs or so .

I plan on checking out in my eighties if i live that long , but hopefully will have my marbles until that day , if not then in my will with authorize MAID ( medically assisted in dying if it is allowed for non-terminal reasons by that time ) if not then will do it myself .

Most people die in hospitals or long term care and it is slow , boring and no fun for your loved ones to come and sit by your side as you slip away eventually. Much better to have a get together with food , drinks and maybe music , then after a couple hours a doctor comes into a different room and gives you a needle to put you to sleep and then the second needle stops your heart . Then something happens ...probably back into the continuim

Too many young people in this thread thinking about death. Sad. There is nothing you can do about it. When your time comes, it comes. Enjoy life and the good things you have going for you. Sleep, eat, exercise. Stay away from drugs and toxic people. An animal in your life is always good. Best therapy and medication you can get for free. I rescued and raise 6 standard donkeys. I have saved them, and they have saved me.
Cool.about the donkeys, but I totally disagree with you about not thinking about death. Its important to dwell on death. Its really the only thing to think about and as scary as it might feel to think about it, its much worse to try and cram this ultimate bottom line down, out of sight.

My daughter's 18 yr old boyfriend had 2 heart attacks 10 minutes apart a month ago. We have collectively been dwelling on it.
It's not healthy.

He's a cross country runner, if he was alone on a trail at 6am, he would be dead.
It happened playing Basketball in a local park. A random nurse gave he CPR and revived him.

Ambulance arrived, He coded again and they had to shock him.

Thinking about death and dying is unproductive. Not good for your health. You should be thinking about living a happy, peaceful, and productive life. Thinking about death won't change anything. That is not to say you should make plans for a will and your estate.

Disagree. Death is the ultimate denominator. All of the things you mention as being worth while thinking about instead, are only made important because of death.

Dont be a pussy. Face up to the reality of death instead of distracting yourself with frivolous distractions and fancies of a terrified ego.

Only a pussy wastes time thinking about death. Real men don't give two-shits about death when the time comes. What about death consumes you so much? A coward dies a thousands deaths.

Let's try to be balanced here guys. Thinking about death or not thinking about changes nothing either way. Coming to terms with death and realizing the impermanence of everything puts things into perspective, but I don't think it's healthy to constantly dwell on it either. Dwelling on anything too much isn't healthy either way. It doesn't matter because we'll all be worm food in the end.

Personally, facing my own mortality was liberating for me.

Nice work. Me too. I dunno where the border is on dwelling vs keeping in mind. I think awareness of death is a constant thing, though. Not just a singular event yoh can check off, having accomplished it.

I think the human psyche is wired to deny death and in doing so, creating anxiety.

These are three really interesting books on the subject. The first, denial of death is a pulitzer winning foundation of contemporary philosophy. The second, denial, is a bio-evolutionary look at how denial of death could evolve and what purpose it serves and the last, worm at the core is a tip of the cap to Becker's work and thr inclusion of a bunch of experimental psychology to support it.

Just add on to what you said which I underlined.

I think there is value in thinking about death, you want to be prepared for it in a way. So the stress won't be as overwhelming for you and for your loved ones.

Without the threat of Death, there is no reason to live.
