inclines are fine if they don't hurt you. That Peter Droge song is pretty cool.

I wouldn't recomend taking the lift any deeper than a 45 degree bend in your elbows either with bar or dumbbells this is where alot of people get shoulder discomfort, even if that means stopping several inches from your chest.

Yeah okay then lets all do t3h invisible board press!!!

Yes because everybody's arms are exactly the same length and the board is always the right place to stop... especially when he's having shoulder discomfort. I'm dying for you to share your wisdom oh wizard of the weight room

The boards can always be the right place to stop, because there are different sizes...but that's beside the point. The real issue is why someone would bother doing incline bench when it gives him shoulder discomfort, when he could be doing flat bench or overhead presses instead. And if those too, cause shoulder discomfort than there's an issue that needs to be addressed.

Personally I like to do an OH exercise in place of the inclines in Madcow, but have done it with the incline once before. I have always used an incline bench that was not adjustable so whatever degree I was given was what I had to use. The only thing I have been instructed to do different than bench is take a slightly narrow grip, but I tend to vary my grips on all bench based presses, unless I am doing a near or max effort.

A lot of football coaches like to go with the incline press, since most gyms do not have jammers. The only real benefit I see to incline is to press with less chest involvement, and or to develop a look. If your shoulder is hurting you might want to find a way to do the exercise without pain or just drop it altogether, otherwise go see shoulder specialist.

For some reason, incline bench hurts my shoulder, but overhead presses don't. So I stay away from the incline, and just do flat.

my overhead press is stuck due to huge pain in the right shoulder.. on flat bench is ok after proper warm up.. any suggestion? and I do some incline on a separate day, not too heavy though let's say my max on bench is 100kgs x 3, incline is like 70kg x 8 and OHP is 50, but today I struggled and did 40 x 8 (more reps with less weight)

If you have the right board yes but we're also talking incline, board gets kind of awkward. I find incline to be benificial to me so I was just trying to offer some variations of the lift to ease his shoulder discomfort. If it is still causing the discomfort then yes absolutely he should probably abandon it. I used to have a little twinge in my shoulder when I did incline but this is some of the stuff I tried and was able to find a comfort zone and slowly condition my shoulder to where I could do true incline presses.

See a sports medicine doctor and see if you can get your shoulder fixed.

Until then, see if you can do overhead with a neutral grip (if you gym has a swiss bar, log press...I wonder if OHP could be done with some cambered bars...?). Or do overheads off pins starting just above where the pain is (assuming the pain is around the bottom of the lift only). And it's a little odd, but I know one person who did a muscle snatch/press hybrid type exercise in the place of presses when his shoulder was bothering him. Or try DB or KB presses / push press and see if they feel any better.

Short version: see a doctor, get shoulder fixed, until then, find a way to put weight overhead without it bothering your shoulder.

You can also try using a reverse grip on overhead if a normal grip bothers you.

Yeah shoulder problems are the worst and good chance they won't go away. I have a problem with my left shoulder for 6 years now(Guess rotator cuff). If I lift any thing heavy overhead(military press) it will aggravated it. Sometimes Ill go up to 8 months without aggravating it but something always ends up hurting it eventually

So best bet is not to follow my footsteps and get it checked out :D
