He didn't have the most difficult road to the title.
I think Aljo and Marlon have had tougher fights.
His best win is probably Jose Aldo.
I think a win over Aljo makes him actually legit.
Thoughts?
It boils down to semantics I guess, but Yan certainly hasn’t proven that he’s the best bantamweight on the planet. He hasn’t even proven that he’s top five.
Even with Khabib, after beating Iaquinta, it felt like he needed to beat Conor and Tony to consolidate his position (and Khabib was widely considered the best LW well before that).
And Yan has it far, far worse than that. Dillashaw was the champion, then got stripped. Then Cejudo won the belt and then retired. Yan faced neither. He did not beat the lineal champ, the most recent champ, an interim champ, a clear number one contender, or even a top five opponent.
“Legitimate” is subjective, but it’s almost impossible to hold a belt under less impressive circumstances. Bisping and Serra had done a lot less to earn the shot but they beat perfectly legitimate lineal champions, as opposed to someone who was 0-1 in the division and earned the title shot by virtue of looking decent in defeat to a guy who had already been stopped in his own title shot.
It’s not Yan’s fault, but he certainly needs at least another win to feel like more than an interim champ, and more like two wins if he wants to be thought of the way Usman, Adesanya and Stipe are.
