I find this post interesting. Why are humans continuously building and developing societies?
For freedom, wealth, power and fame...
New societies create new markets. The laws of supply and demand state that you need demand to get rich, so new lands with new people created a new way to supply that demand.
After WWII there was a step away from this kind of behaviour. Economic warfare took over. America didn't want to fall into the same trap that Rome and Germany did. They knew they couldn't afford to rule the world, so instead of using armies they used corporations to rob other countries of their wealth and resources. For example, The U.S. government loaned Chile a bunch of "foreign-aid" money, in return for Chile signing over the rights for their water to an American Corporation, named Bechtel. Now it's illegal to collect rain-water in Chile, and water bills a disproportionately high. America gets to exploit Chile's resources for economic gain, without spending billions on a war, that no one would like. The money makes it's way into the U.S. economy on way or another.
What are we striving for in the long-term?
Most of us are striving for retirement, for a comfortable life, for the ability to provide for our children's future etc. We need to because these things aren't provided for us...
Our governments are either striving to rule the world (economically, or militarily) or they're striving to survive and maintain their power. Their goal is to maintain or grow their power.
We live in a capitalist society, a capitalist world tbh. The goal of Capitalism is endless growth. The rich run the world and they reap the rewards, the poor work and get to live a relatively comfortable life
Why do we perpetually develop technology?
Because new technology creates new companies, which means new wealth and new jobs. It feeds the economy.
Also to provide things like eternal life to the wealthy elite few who can afford it. Walt Disney is frozen for a reason, when technology catches up he will be brought back to life. It may take another hundred years or more but that's one of the reason's why.
So our leaders and wealthy elite can retreat to Mars after they destroy earth. So they can have weapons that will destroy their enemies quicker, etc.
We are always trying to improve. Why? Our conscious? But why? Is our conscious being programed by the subconscious? What do you believe that we are striving to become?
Are we? All Humans?
Who's programming our subconscious? Society... Capitalist society.
We have enough knowledge and resources that we could all live in a Utopian society with minimal work-weeks for all, but that doesn't benefit the wealthy at all, and most of the middle class has been tricked into thinking it wouldn't benefit them either. We can't agree and we don't want to be equal so we compete against each other.
We're striving to provide for ourselves and our families, by serving those who are running the world. They're striving to have unlimited wealth and power. There's no great goal that Humans (as one society) are working towards. America has been ruling the world economically (and to a lesser extent militarily) since the end of WWII, their goal was to maintain and expand that power, other governments strive to over-take the USA or just to survive, as mentioned earlier.
Now the economic war is shifting in China's favour. Our goal as western society is to take the power back and maintain our dominance. We don't want to have to pay expensive import prices. We can't afford to pay the people who make our clothes in China $10 an hour, we need third world countries to provide us with cheap labour so our companies/economy can thrive. War's are partly designed to keep countries poor also, so they can serve other countries.
Society did not evolve naturally.
