Regardless of whether Hitler existed or not, there was going to be pain for the Germans regardless, because of the Soviets. To only look at Hitler's crimes is to ignore the huge red bear in the East, which had already invaded Finland and Poland alongside Hitler, massacring people in unspeakable numbers (by the millions before Hitler had even touched anyone), with no intention of stopping there. From the time that Stalin got into power, he focused much of the Soviet resources and manpower solely on re-armaments, in order to conquer Eastern Europe and drive Germany, France and Britain into a position of weakness (which he eventually did, though to a lesser extent than intended as a result of the casualties of World War II, and because of the United States taking responsibility as a world power).

I do not think the Germans would've been left in peace because of the level of radicalism and world-conquering ideology inherent within the Communist circles at that time in Europe. Nazis, and fascism in general (Mussolini, after all, was an ex-socialist who became disillusioned with the ideology), were an extreme reactionary opposition to the Communists, who wished to dissolve nations and remove the ownership of property.

If you remove both the Nazis and the Communists from the equation, then perhaps a degree of peace could've been reached.
