Sure, that's right now. But he was hoping to set himself up as the long term GOP alternative and was courting donors to make that happen. He needs those donors and their support if he's going to have even a minimal chance of beating Trump. With Rubio and McCarthy now making indirectly critical comments about this situation, he has to be wondering how to get out of this without looking like he lost. Because he did lose. This has overshadowed his political positioning to such a degree that it can only hurt him. By comparison, the bussing refugee thing was a political win for him, it conveyed the right message to the base but didn't linger or turn into a distraction. This is not that.
