I only watched the one with Cavill after MI:3, and it was just average. I think those movies just allow Tom to have fun and do crazy stunts.
I seem to recall that one getting all this praise, and I just wasn't emotionally invested at all.

I think a lot of people feel that way. They're exciting blockbusters, but everyone became too emotionally disconnected because it was too hard to follow whatever the hell the unifying narrative was supposed to be about. It's sort of the same thing that killed the mojo of the Halo universe in video games, or the X-Files in its later years as it waned when it stopped being an incredible monster-of-the-week show, and focused too much on that Deep Throat government conspiracy shit.

They all became too convoluted. I don't want to have to do all that homework. Just wanna popcorn and chill.

It would have needed to hit something like $900 million just to break even. And the movie wasn't good so hitting that was a long shot. Some great set pieces, but the story was straight shit.

How is cinema actually doing anyway?

I thought that it got smashed during the pandemic, and has been struggling since the arrival of home streaming services such as Netflix and Prime...

Some movies needs to be watched in cinema for the best experience. Unfortunately not many movies of the past 10 years are these.

Along with the generation that are 20 years old and younger rather staying at home, scrolling through their social medias for 18 hours a day watching 15s shorts/reels/whatever those nonsense are nowdays, cinema will probably be dead in 5years or so. Unless they start making them "premium".

There are some cinemas in Singapore and Malaysia that are converting into premium luxury vibe instead of just watching movies. 30 seatings in total, recliner sofa, chefs and all those perks for x5 the usual tickets. Regular movie goers are gone.

It's not in the best place.

That's the other half of this. Cruise is trying to hold the cinema up. Doesn't want the culture to be lost. But it's sort of dying. Streaming, big screen TVs, blockbuster fatigue, and all that.

I have Mission Impossible on VHS that I intend on watching for the first time this week. I find Tom Cruise very off putting but I’ll give it a chance I guess.

Doubt I’ll ever get around to seeing this one.
Maybe you will get round to seeing this one 30 years later.

I only watched the first one and that was a long time ago. I didn't this it was very good at the time. I remember thinking it was one of those clever for the point of being clever nights movies. Also, but a big Tom Cruise fan in general.

They've sure made a lot of them so I'm in the minority. Were they big enough hits previously to justify that budget?

The last two have been the worst since MI:2, which over time has become laughably bad.

Everything between 2 and Reckonings have been quality. The last two arent even bad. Well, this last one is. It took about half the movie for it to remember that its a Mission Impossible movie and the villains are weak as fuck.

Time for Cruise to make a re-emergence in actual, legit acting roles. He's done so much running that people forget the dude can act and has legit range and presence.

I agree totally, he has to get back to acting roots. That's what made him a star in the first place.

Cinema is definitely not that great as it once was. But who knows what they make for streaming nowadays.

Watch Edge of Tomorrow. Half the movie is Tom dying in various ways. My wife hates Cruise too and she loved it.

Yes. People got tired of Tom Cruise designing stunts he does on his own, then making a movie around it. It worked maybe half a dozen times until it lost its luster.
He made the same money it just cost more to make. It's the forth highest grossing movie of the year.

TS title is clickbait
