The closest thing I can think of was when Eugenio Tadeu fought a young Royler.

Maybe to another BJJ guy, but I don't think they lost to another style in a challenge or garage match. Obviously Rickson lost on a technicallity or point to Tripp in Sambo.

Word has it that...... to start with Robin Gracie is not really that good. He was seen getting taped out by students back in days when he was brown belt and was teaching back in Rio.
I think he was never really into JJ at all and went to the Navy.
After the navy, he decided to go into the family trade.
He went to Spain and decided to advertise the old Gracie Challenge on poster like his Dad did. The poster said that you win so and so 100,000 pesas and the gracie challenge is always open. blah..blah..
Then he went to do a seminar in France. A guy came and asked him in front of the whole class for the challenge. Robin could not back down and told him to come back later after the seminar.
French guy came back with his friends + camera.
Robin was told by some guys that he was just a silly kung fu dude and Robin thought It will finish quickly.Robin had no idea he got set up by a pro mma fighter. Then Robin got tired and tapped.
But he asked in return for a rematch.
Damien refused to give him a rematch and asked for Royce or Rickson instead.
So Robin (and Royce) went to Damien's place of work (which is a nigthclub) and forced Damien for a rematch by beating the shit out of him.

Really? Royce bashed a pro mma fighter in a nightclub and this is the first im hearing of it - wouldnt surprise me to see Gracies flipping out at a loss but this seems like a sewing circle chinese whispers thing to me. Got a source?

Not an individual Gracie, but the students of Oswaldo Fadda beat Helios students in some sort of competition way back when.

There's some(but not a lot) of information on it here

Oswaldo Fadda | BJJ Heroes

What about that fight (not really a dojo challenge per se) but it was like an mma fight with a gracie student (blackbelt I think) wearing a gi vs a luta livre guy and the ll guy just mauled him

When Robin went back to get revenge he came with more people than just Royce. Royce posted about this on the UG when it happened. Damien Riccio was posting everyday about the beef with the Gracies basically giving a day by day on it. Royce said he went to make sure things didn't get crazy, they go 5 on 1 and beat him up. After Robin got his revenge, GUNSHOTS went off. I think someone just fired them in the air to try to scare everybody away. The whole point was to go to Damiens place of work since they were pissed at how Robin just got done doing a whole day seminar and wasn't really prepared when the challenge was made, so they wanted to go to Damien's work when he wasn't ready for them in return.

As far as Robin's skill level. He wasn't very interested in BJJ like his brothers, he had a military background. When he competed in the first ADCC, he wasn't even a black belt yet.

You talking about that poor blue belt that got destroyed by Wanderlei Silva? That was so sad to see, the guy was rockin his gi and blue belt so proudly too. lol. That fight doesn't quality as a Gracie losing a dojo challenge though.

Nah dude, this was before Wandy. The LL guy grabbed the dudes gi and beat him with his free hand brutally. Was in a ring in brazil oldschool style.

so what happened in the royler tadeu fight? i only watched the first vid and scrolled through the last, it seemed to me tadeu just kept beating him up. did royler actually win this?

I love how martial arts are all about honour ...until you decide you'd rather be a bully.

1. Issue arrogant challenge
2. Lose arrogant challenge to arrogant challenge accepter
3. Form gang and take revenge the criminal way
4. Profit!

That wasn't the Gracie Challenge though, that was a Sambo match.

And to be totally fair, it wasn't a technicality, Rickson got thrown. Supposedly he landed with Tripp in and armbar (how that happens off an Uchimata I have no idea) but under the rules of Sambo and Judo, that's the end of the match. I know it's frustrating from a BJJ or sub grappling perspective where the idea of losing off a single takedown is a foreign concept, but under the rules of Sambo it's a clean win.

Robin Gracie lost a challenge match, but I see someone has already posted that.

I believe eventually they just kind of stopped. After you fight for an hour sometimes you're a little sick of fighting this guy, especially when it's clearly not going to get finished by anyone.

Does Helio vs Kimura count?

I think we're talking about the Gracie Challenge, whereby someone comes to the dojo responding to an open invitation.

Helio was actually the one who challenged Kimura, and had to beat Kato to face him. Kimura wasn't responding to an ad in the newspaper and didn't really have any interest in facing Helio.

i know but considering royler got pretty much nothing on him, i'd imagine he lost that fight because he was the one taking the beating for an hour.

Yeah, I know. That's why I didn't say the Tripp fight was a challenge match.

Well yeah but then it's kind of irrelevant to the discussion. We might as well toss in all the things Royce and Royler have lost, as well as all their cousins, nephews, uncles, father, etc. It's not like the Gracies are undefeated in every single thing any of them has ever done.

Sakuraba & Matt Hughes would've done the Gracie challenge, and beat on Royce, if the Gracies made it a live PPV event and paid more than Pride or UFC.
