During UFC 220 press conferences I clearly remember DC stating there was absolutely no way he would go up and fight huge guys like Stipe or NGannou.

But then, Stipe stops the hype train, DC comes off on a win and Dana starts talking about a potential fight. Next thing you know, the fight is set.

Dana pressured him with a large paycheck.

I can't picture anybody pressuring DC to do anything, lol. He's a grown ass man and in touch with his emotions.

Dana offered DC a seven figure payday and DC said fuck it, I'll help you sell Stipe to the neckbeards.

With this fight happening who is Werdum going to fight? Ngannou?

I think this is the answer. Dana offered a big enough carrot and DC knows he will retire soon win or lose. If he loses, well he finishes with a big payday. If he wins then he has the legacy of an ATG.

Dana may have offered him good terms for ongoing employment in his commentator role after he retires as well which could be really appealing for a man Cormier's age if he still wants to be involved with the sport long term.

"I made him an offer he couldn't refuse..."
Gottdamn I could go for some Popeyes rn.

And if he loses, he did so jumping back up to HW to fight a current dominant champ.

It's like the exact opposite of GSP fighting Bisping (minus the 4 year layoff).

It’s a good solution for the mess him and Pokes got into.
DC beat all the contenders left at LHW and Pokes is unreliable and will be out for at least 2 more years.
Fighting the HW champion(and a respectable one in Stipe)will help him cleaning the bad taste that his last fight with Pokes left in the fan base.
Honestly,if I was Daniel I would not sign anything with Pokes in it until he take his
Punishment, fights at least 3 times and get tested every week until the day of they fight.
Gusta needs another fight before asking for a rematch.
The rest of the category is not on position to ask for a tittle match.

There’s nothing else there and the dude is hitting 40s.
Give him a good paycheck a good match against another champion and send him Riding into the horizon.

He deserves it.

its a great fight either way

theirs not much for either guy at their classes and dc was undefeated at hw

all that was really on the table was werdum rematch or cain for stipe, and a gus rematch for dc

The only LHW champ to move up and fight the current HW champ, possibly making history if he wins. Also, a huge payday. I wouldn't call that pressure. I see it as further cementing a great legacy and making that cheddatenor-32.gif

Exactly!

Is Popeye's like KFC? So good.

No pressure needed. DC knows he's never getting another crack at Jon Jones in the octagon. The only thing left he can do is something Jon hasn't done, and that's becoming a 2 division champ by taking the heavyweight strap.
