International Did COVID come from a Lab in China? US Energy Dept asserts it was a lab leak [megathread]

You seem to be assuming that if they were sent bat samples from Laos, one of them was 'Banal-52' (which i believe has an almost identical rbd to sars-cov-2), but the article doesnt say this as far as i can see, just that they were apparently sent samples collected in Laos. Viscount Ridley and the Telegraph have been pushing the lab-leak hard: not the most impartial sources, and this doesnt tell anymore about the origin of sars-cov-2 as far as im concerned.

Matter of odds

Wuhan scientists were studying viral samples of high-risk bat species living in Laos - the country where the closest relative to Covid-19 has been found, leaked documents show.

Now, leaked emails between EcoHealth Alliance and US government funders show viral samples were being collected from bats in Laos and sent back to the Wuhan Institute of Virology for study.

So a virus that is genetically most similar to Sars-Cov-2 is found in bats in Laos. Wuhan scientists received bat virus samples from Laos. Outbreak happens in Wuhan, which is over 1000 miles from Laos.

Disagree it was purpose…:

But gross negligence when dealing with potentially deadly viruses is just as bad

I agree. I don't think it was on purpose, but there was definitely something that went wrong in Wuhan and now the world is paying for it. An article came out from Vanity Fair in October talking about how it is basically the wild west when it comes to questionable research being done and a lack of oversight and accountability.

NIH Admits Funding Risky Virus Research in Wuhan

Instead of helping to lead a search for COVID-19’s origins, with the pandemic now firmly in its 19th month, the NIH has circled the wagons, defending its grant system and scientific judgment against a rising tide of questions. “It’s just another chapter in a sad tale of inadequate oversight, disregard for risk, and insensitivity to the importance of transparency,” said Stanford microbiologist Dr. David Relman. “Given all of the sensitivity about this work, it’s difficult to understand why NIH and EcoHealth have still not explained a number of irregularities with the reporting on this grant.”

Alina Chan, a Boston-based scientist and coauthor of the book Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19, said the NIH was in a “very challenging position. They funded research internationally to help study novel pathogens and prevent against them. But they had no way to know what viruses had been collected, what experiments had been conducted, and what accidents might have occurred.”

Leaked emails between scientific research foundation EcoHealth Alliance and US government funders show viral samples were being actively collected from bats in Laos. These samples were then taken back to the Wuhan Institute of Virology for study.

The emails between EcoHealth Alliance and the US government funders suggest that viral DNA from “bats and other high-risk species” were sent to Wuhan between June 2017 to May 2019.

Closest known relatives of virus behind COVID-19 found in Laos
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02596-2
The study also doesn’t clarify how a progenitor of the virus could have travelled to Wuhan, in central China, where the first known cases of COVID-19 were identified — or whether the virus hitched a ride on an intermediate animal.
************************

The Nature article doesn't address HOW it got to Wuhan and avoids any lab leak theories. But it seems these emails in the OP now uncover HOW the virus got to Wuhan from Laos.... lol

Well... Here's what we know.

- Origin of COVID-19 appears to the Wuhan. COVID-19 has NOT been found in nature in Wuhan (yet).
- The only "In the Wild" virus that comes close to COVID-19 found in nature appears to have come from Laos.
- Researcher transported the Laos Viruses to Wuhan from Laos...
- Profit?

Obviously, since COVID-19 has NOT been found in the wild near Wuhan yet... It most plausible explanation is that it came from the Wuhan lab and it's very possible this Laos virus could be involved. It's by far the most plausible scenario since they been investigating the origins.

Breaking News

- Banal-52, a virus found in bats in Laos, was sent to researchers in Wuhan. This virus is purported to be genetically the closest to Sars-Cov-2 (96.8% similarity) . Until the exsistence of Banal-52 was uncovered, the virus with the greatest genetic similarity to Sars-Cov-2 was in bats in Yunnan China.

- Leaked emails between EcoHealth Alliance and US gov. funding agencies show that viruses were collected in Laos and sent to Wuhan

- Matthew White Ridley (aka Viscount Ridley) who co-authored the book "Viral: The Search for the Origin of Covid-19" states:

“Banal-52 is not close enough to be the progenitor, it's still not the smoking gun, but it's pretty good. So maybe this virus started in Laos, not China. Interesting possibility.

“But we got a leak of a document showing that the EcoHealth Alliance was sampling bats in Laos.

“They say in the document that because it would be complicated to come back and ask the US Government for permission to give some of the grant to a Laotian lab, they’d like to send all these samples to a lab that can analyse it for them. It was in a place called Wuhan.

“So the outbreak happened in a city with the world’s largest research programme on bat-borne coronaviruses, whose scientists had gone to at least two places where these Sars-CoV-2-like viruses live.”

Highly plausible scenarios:

1) The virus escaped from the lab, while the Wuhan scientists were studying it.
2) Wuhan scientists did gain-of-function on Banal-52, and this modified virus escaped the lab

I am still amazed that neither the Trump admin nor the Biden admin raided the offices of EcoHealth Alliance, brought Peter Daszak before Congress and the FBI hasn't taken him in for questioning.

Lol, like the Biden admin is going to do anything. Didn't bring up COVID or the Wuhan lab once during his 3-4 hour zoom meeting with Xi. He is a weak leader, kowtowing to China and having his son get them huge caches of raw material.

At the same time, you have the leader of NIH wanting legal action and the DOJ involved with anyone speaking out against Fauci and such.

Your thread title is pretty misleading and is saying something that looks quite significant, but that the article isnt. Also, youre suggesting that sars-cov-2 mustve come from Laos, when we know that the bat coronaviruses are mish-mashes of different bits of genetic code from different viruses, corresponding with their roosting and migration habits in the wild.

And China has done everything possible to cover it all up...

Even blaming other nations and suggesting the outbreaks started somewhere else.

What is misleading about the title? The title in the Telegraph article say these new documents were "leaked"

I am not suggesting Sars-Cov-2 came from Laos, because Sars-Cov-2 may be the result of GoF research. The posted article states the virus from Laos is closest yet to Sars-Cov-2.

My hunch is :
a) the Wuhan lab was studying the virus and it escaped or
b) the Wuhan lab modified the virus (GoF research) and it escaped.

lol... Ok Jinping

What are you talking about?

The article doesn't state as fact that it came from Laos, but that the the viruses found there are the closest they've come to finding in the wild. And I love this part of the article.

The genetic sequences collected from both Yunnan and Laos were kept in an online database at the Wuhan institute. However, that was removed in September 2019, leaving experts unsure of exactly what strains were studied at the lab.

Convenient... lol

China is asshole

Fauchi and the NIH are criminally negligent fools to trust China to make right and ethical choices... While being transparent with what they were doing in that Lab.

The virus was created and released on purpose. Trump was right. And Fauci should be in prison

In 2017 Fauci admitted there will be a "suprise outbreak."

Are you a real person?
Jesus christ lol

Just to be clear; you believe Russia interfers in our elections too using these methods, yes?

'Leaked documents show Wuhan lab was studying Laos bat virus most similar to Sars-Cov-2' That 'most similar' would be Banal-52...where does it say in the article that they were studying this virus?

Ok you got me there. I will edit the O.P.
There is no solid proof Banal-52 was at the Wuhan lab, only a very very high possibility it was.

If nothing suspicious is going on, then why did EcoHealth recently deny there were bat samples from Laos when it is now clear from the leaked documents that there was.
