Did Chris Weidman completely underestimate rockhold ?

He had his third kid about a month before the fight. A newborn in your house will definitely have an effect on your training/sleep schedule. Also I remember he was 192lbs on fight week, and cut a lot less weight. Maybe that cost him as Luke is a huge MW.

Sucks bc I love Weidman, but Luke was the better man.

well, weidman was doing a fucking pre celebratory dinner the night before the fight, so theres that

Did Weidman typically have "pre celebratory" large dinners, or was this in fact a reflection of his expectation to readily defeat Luke?

Looks like they're both cheesing at each other

I don't believe he underestimated him. It was a very close fight where both guys were exhausted. A mistake from either guy would have ended in disaster. When they were both fresh Weidman was winning the fight. I can't believe that people on here are saying Rockhold is a "superior MMA fighter" like Weidman hasn't been a bad ass. Either guy can win the next fight as well.

Chris weighing less than some welter weights was a huge problem. He didn't have the strength to deal with Rockhold.

- Rockhold had already beaten Jacare

- Rockhold was a former Strikeforce champ

- Rockhold beat Machida much easier than Weidman did

- Rockhold also demolished perennial contender Bisping with ease

- Rockhold was the first top fighter that Weidman had faced who could match him for youth and size

- Rockhold was the first top fighter that Weidman had faced who had a BJJ game and credentials to match or even exceed his own

- Weidman brought in a new nutritionist especially to ensure the weight cut for this fight was his best ever

- Weidman said that Luke was his toughest test yet due to being the most well-rounded fighter he had ever faced

- Weidman and Longo both repeatedly and confidently stated in the buildup that training had gone better than ever, that Chris was better prepared than ever, that we were going to see a better Chris Weidman than ever before

Anyone then retrospectively guessing that he was underestimating Rockhold is absolutely KIDDING themselves.

Underestimating-Weidman = this week's Non-Spinning Weidman.

What will it be next week I wonder???

So i was looking at stills of weidman and rockhold face off i notice that weidman was giggling like child he completely expected to run through rockhold in his mind he was totally superior in every way. Just check out these photos he was laughing like rockhold was a joke. I don't blame him if you beat anderson twice lyoto machida than smash vitor like a pancake you would feel invincible as well. I think weidman forgot what got him there and just thought he was invincible even to the point he was talking about moving up and fighting jones did weidman underestimate rockhold

One thing is for sure, you damn sure don't think like a fighter.
Every fighter thinks they can beat pretty much ever other fighter.
Just because a fighter has an outward "awww shucks" personality doesn't mean that inwardly he doesn't see himself as the baddest MOFO in the world.
That is simply the mentality one must have to be the best in the world.

weidman wasn't winning when they were fresh.

based on what we saw luke will be favored in rematch.

Weedman was just flirting. Is normal.

i don't like a fighter is silly to say i don't state my opinions on emotion like most of you but there's a balance you gotta keep if you cross that line it becomes arrogance and underestimation which will get you killed in this sport i think weidman cross that line because everything was going well he defended his belt 3 times against killers got a reebok deal was getting paid well he just creamed the guy that just kick rockholds head off weidman felt untouchable if you follow the build up like i did you would know

Keep in mind this all happen within the first two rounds. There's also a few more things Luke did.. by round 3 the rest is history.

Weidman did the same thing that McMann, Thomson, Horodecki and Rousey did but noone should ever do in a MMA match. TURNED HIS BACK!

It's like saying...

that check hook rockhold has is killer he catches his opponents running in with it and it loops to the point that it lands to the back of the head most of the time such a sweet move he got machida with that as well

Great topic TS, will watch this one closely. I have nothing to substantiate this, but my "gut feel" at the time was that Weidman in fact underestimated Rockhold in a big way.
spent too much time watching this...

changed gameplan to focus on spinning kicks...

No way did he underestimate him.

Chris just got smashed by a better fighter.

If you say this you're taking away from Luke's win.
Chris is a professional
