Did anyone give Royce Gracie a chance at Submitting Matt Hughes?

Everybody automatically gets a 1% chance since its MMA and all

Then ya should read Art Davie´s book... Ya´ll understand why Horion chose Hoyce over Hickson.

I don't even know who Hickson is, Other than Royce I don't know any of the Gracies.

The real question is did anyone give Hughes a chance at submitting Royce.

lol what?

1. Royce is much bigger than Royler.

2. Royce was chosen because Rickson had a beef with Rorion. https://www.bjjee.com/featured/ufc-...-fighting-in-ufc-was-because-of-rorion-money/

How would Royler of gone against the bigger guys that Royce fought? I'm assuming Royce fought the earlier UFC's at light heavy? I'm not throwing shade, that's actually a question. I was under the assumption that Royce got picked because he could mix it with the bigger boys which is where the fame was.

I tought they were making this fight again when i read the tittle.

"When the Gracie Family were brought on board, Rorion chose Royce, the skinniest of the brothers, for the tournament, purportedly because if would look more impressive when he Brazilian finished off the other, much larger fighters."

That's exact quote from Mark Hunts book, I don't know if it's true, I don't know if what any of you are saying is true.

I can’t believe they made this fight.

Royce is a legend no doubt and he had balls stepping up to fight the bigger stronger wrestler who was a bad matchup for him.

But was this meant as a serious fight or a freak show at the time.

I wasn’t an MMA fan until TUF 3.
Royce Gracie was over the hill by the time they fought. I met him about a week before that fight. By then he was mostly focused on training law enforcement.

The truth is... Horion could have chosen Hickson (smaller than Hoyce but bigger frame, started his career vs Rei Zulu as a WW, aprox. 177 lbs).
Hickson then competed in Japan as a MW.

The size difference between Hickson and the other dudes would have made his wins impressive too...

The UFC did not have weight classes until UFC 12. All previous UFC events were open weight.

That was a pure hype job, irrelevant fight.
Hoyce was 40 yrs old, already past his physical prime in Pride.

Now, Hoyce himself (and if ya listen to some members of the family like Helson who blamed the loss on Hoyce not focussin´entirely on GJJ) for sure was the 1st to hype himself.

A lot of people acted like Royce had no chance, but a lot gave him a chance, and I'd say Royce was the favorite amongst casual fans that I knew.

The majority of fans were so clueless they introduced Royce as undefeated (and included his non-UFC wins, but not the loss to Saku in his record)

I gave Royce a .06% chance of catching a wreckless Hughes , but no, I knew Matt would win. You don’t struggle against Hideo or Bobby Ologun and think you can beat Hughes.

I wanted Royce to win simply because it would have been nostalgic, like some things don’t change....But they do.

He didn't fight Ologun.

Tokoro is no slouch. And he had a big speed advantage over Royce being smaller and younger. A lot of people said Hughes wouldn't be able to do what Tokoro did to him, and they were right about that. Hughes didn't rely on speed.

Royces only somewhat recent fights were against Akebono (huge SHW) , Tokoro (BW) Yoshida (HW and Olympic medal winning Judoka) and Sakuraba (legendary grappler and they went 90 minutes) The 3 most recent were in K-1 so even most hardcore MMA fans didn't see them, let alone the casuals.

He hadn't fought any WW's recently and he'd done well against other larger elite grapplers. There was nothing to go on, in terms of similar opponents or MMA math, so for those who hadn't seen his recent fights, it was perfectly reasonable to think Royce could win. Even though it was a foolish opinion.

matt Hughes is probly one of the most overrated mma fighters of all time. He was good for his era but anyone in that division at the time would have starched Royce gracie inside of 2 rounds

I thought Hughes would destroy GSP. That sucked.

Yeah, a guy who dominated everyone he fought until GSP is one of the most overrated mma fighters of all time. I have another idea - you are one of the dumbest assholes to ever post.

Ha ha Hughes was around -225 as the betting favorite, and I was absolutely STUNNED it was that low. I was still in my 20's and didn't have a ton of $. My wife and I were in Vegas a few weeks before and they opened the line at the Imperial Palace (no longer there) sportsbook literally minutes before we had to catch a cab to the airport. I had won a good amount on the trip and I tried to bet it all on Hughes (my winnings were about $2500 give or take) but the freaking IP sportsbook would only let me bet $1k LMAO. They must have gotten almost no action on MMA or...IDK. My wife was still pissed about me betting that much on a fight. I told her it was like stealing, that Hughes should be like a 15 or 20 to 1 favorite and not 2-1 but she was still nervous. Then we watched the fight a few weeks later...and she saw what I was talking about.
