Did anyone for a moment think that Dustin might pull off the upset last night?

After the cut, I believed that if he managed to win the 5th round, some judges might grant him the victory. Given that two judges had the score tied at 2-2 going into the 5th, my assessment was not off.

Nah. He was pulling up his short legs more than he was doing anything else. Legit lol'd when Islam timed like 3 takedowns immediately after Dustin dropped both hands to pull his short legs up for the 300th time.
I like Poirier but this drives me crazy about him, why does he keep doing that? he should be throwing instead of pulling up his panties every few second, its ridiculous. I wanted him to win but yeah its so frustrating when he keeps doing that because guys have become clued up on it and they throw as soon as he does it or they try to grab him for a takedown

He never did that in WEC, and he didn't do in his first few UFC fights, but I noticed it in the Cub Swanson fight that he was pulling his panties up every few seconds and guess what? he lost, because Cub was hitting him flush every time he did it. I really don't understand it, there are so many different short types you can use, he should just wear the same ones that guys like Adesanya and Strickland do which are skin tight.

It looks like a nervous tic of some kind.

Trunks tourettes

The cut was bad. I remember thinking that and being concerned about it. I knew that in the end though it didnt look like Dustin could hold out forever against Islam's attacks

It's an OCD thing. I've seen him do it before, but I think last night he did it far more than normal. Maybe I'm wrong.

The funny thing is he might still do it even if he was wearing a speedo. Rafael Nadal has a pre-serve ritual where he uses his fingers to brush his hair behind his ears and after he cut his hair short and there was nothing to brush back anymore he still did it as part of his OCD routine.

Was it? They head clashed a bunch of times including one that shattered Poirier's nose. Islam seemed never close to being finished or threatened at all. Poirier was fighting for his life at multiple points nearly every round until he was finally finished. Looked like a fight on its way to being scored 4-1 pretty clearly with Poirier taking high amounts of damage.

Poirier looked winded after round one and his shots all looked much slower and weak than they usually were. He never really wobbled Islam or threw a flurry at him which is his usual style. His lead hook is always crisp and quick but looked underwater slow. And he barely threw out any leg kicks either probably due to being paranoid about takedowns. He just looked overwhelmed and defeated.
I guess Strickland vs DDP was a closer fight but this one was a lot more fun. And yeah Dustin was absolutely landing and coming on in the 4th and 5th. He was having more success defending the takedowns as well. Islam was definitely taking it to him but was getting tagged as the fight went on, certainly the hardest he has been pushed in a fight in a long time

I actually did think he had a shot & picked him in tapology as well as put a fook load of sportsbook cash on him.

The assumption was that because he was so driven to write teh final chapter of his story, that he would be ready for the grappling heavy approach like a man possessed.

For sure he was, but it wasn't enough. I was on the edge of my seat going into the 5th thinking that 2 roundz "could've" went to Dustin. For sure the round where Dustin split Mak's head open wit teh elbow, earned him an otherwise close round.

I thought the Islam secured the decision by round 3, but Poirier’s late rally was setting up a massive robbery.

Glad Makhachev didn’t let the judges screw him

Yeah that cut he opened up on Islam was really bad. Thought he won round 4 and maybe 2. Was really starting to turn the momentum. I wish he would fought during BJs time. He would have been a long reigning champ then I think.

No. He didn't land anything that was overly significant or that really staggered Islam

Not really honestly, maybe in small moments. He never really seemed in control to me, just had some moments of success. I didn’t have that tide is turning impression, I didn’t feel his success was consistent enough.

I gotta admit, when he started stuffing a bunch of Islams TDs mid fight, and was teeing off on his body when Makachev tried to thai plum him, I started to sit up in my chair. Both dudes covered in blood at the tail end of the third, nose to nose talking to each other as the bell rang - Gangster shit.

He shucked off a couple of clinches, I think in the fourth round and yelled at Islam, "Get the fuck off me." 😄

It started to look like he was beginning to shift the momentum and start landing more shots.

But major props to Mak with that fifth round ankle pick / sweep into that choke.

Crazy good fight. Far more competitive than I thought it would be.

Dustin had me going, "Holy shit...What IF...." for a moment there.
No, he lasted longer than I thought he would. But he gave up like always.

Which two judges had it 2-2? Would your assessment be off if I told you two judges had it 3-1 for Islam going into the 5th?

Before the fight, not so much... during the fight, yeah after he started having success making Islam work. But damn Islam would just hit a strike (punch or knee) that would make Dustin back up.... Islam is Amazing.

Even though he was getting his ass kicked for much of the fight, he legit had a puncher's chance. He did better than most of Islam's opponent minus Volk. I didn't think he'd have a chance to win off decision but yeah by KO, if Islam kept playing that game, he could have gotten knockout. Seems there were pockets in the fight when Islam was falling in love with his combinations or probably too tired to wrestle after being stuffed.

Momentum changed in the 4th and Islam looked like he was starting to fade. Dustin definitely had a chance around then but Islam is just too good.
