Media Demetrious Johnson: "Boxing Is MORE Exciting Than MMA/UFC Right Now"

Luke Thomas made a really good video on this recently.

Boxing is just hotter with the bigger, more youthful casual stars with a lot happening almost every single week.

Apex, oversaturing an already thin roster has crippled the UFC’s ability to build mid to big time stars unfortunately.

Boxing has multiple events every wkend. That being said it still doesn’t touch the ufc. The majority of their big fights are complete mismatches. They’ve been lucky with how Garcia/Haney, usyk/fury, and caterall/Taylor went recently

Different model.

The UFC is a revolving door of talent where fighters are manipulated like pawns on a chessboard because they have zero rights. Unfortunately the revolving door needs maintenance as it has been used way too many times, especially the last few years with the amount of cards the UFC owes ESPN.

You can essentially do whatever you want with rankings, promotion etc. Guys are made to look like killers out of necessity.

It’s a smart model, yet one that is easy to see through once you lift the rug.

June is is gonna be lit.

I keep forgetting about Bam vs Estrada.

Don’t even know what the MMA equivalent would be.

Basically a living hall of famer with a couple of good performances left vs a future hall of famer.

Boxing is making the big fights right now...which sport someone prefers thats another story, but boxing is doing very well right now.

I'm wondering how they can pay the main card hundreds of millions of dollars. Do they sell a billion PPVs?

100's is a stretch, having said that, boxing operates different than in MMA, in those big purse fights almost always one or both of the fighters are actually promoting the event, so instead of the 20% at best the UFC gives to fighters, its the fighters taking the big cut, and at times it happens who co-promotes with them operate at a loss, specially in those Saudi cards where they overpay everyone, those guys are not interested in making money.

Caleb Plant says hello. Some of these moves would be great in the new Undisputed game.

Boxing is beautiful. There’s a reason it’s the go to striking art for so many high level MMA champions.

Ya. Those Saudi Cards are a wash. The Davis vs Garcia payout is easier to understand as it was all from pure revenue. PPVs and Gate.

Canelo v Crawford, we still don't know how good he is I reckon, if he could take on Canelo we'd find out. Benavidez would be a banger as well though, why not both?
I tend to agree. He looked spectacular against Spence, more than I expected, but at this point we don't know how much of that is due to Spence himself, or a particularly one sided style matchup. Spence's next fight should tell us a lot.

But yeah I'd love both. If I had to pick one it would probably be Crawford due to the reason you mentioned, and more of a fascinating style matchup, size difference n' all.

So is hockey. So is basketball.

try not to cry aboot it.

what about footwork, combinations, etc.

also- on the surface, people think 3D chess is more complex and cerebral than regular chess but it turns out it's actually much less interesting.

more stuff =/= more complex

That's cause the new route is sign a bunch of mid tier fighters on cheap contracts and push the brand instead of fighters.
They also seem completely opposed to building up another Ronda Rousey, Jones, or Conor. They would rather have human cockfighting with a turnstile of nameless, faceless strikers than risk one of these peeps ever touching any kind of money.
Covid, the Apex, ESPN, and the Consider Series are the main reasons why the UFC has dealt us shitty card after shitty card. Yeah, they have one good card every few months, but most of their shit are stinkers.

I agree. UFC has had very lack luster cards as of late.

Boxing and kickboxing orgs have had way more fun matchups and feel like they have been moving quicker. UFC has like 5 champions who never fight cause....uh....they just can't ok?
The UFC have had great PPVs lately, especially considering that all their champs are pretty new champs. 300 and 299 were some of the best cards they've had. Boxing is still only really good for a few good individual fights/year, and I don't think DJ would have said this if Fury/Usyk hadn't just happened. That was one of the best fights they've had in years, but it was 1 fight and just happened to fall in the 7 week break between UFC events. If it was just Garcia/Haney, or it happened just a few weeks earlier when UFC 300 was fresh on everyone's mind, nobody would be claiming boxing is putting on better cards than the UFC.

Well, duh
HW: a guy who fought once in 4 years wants to fight an older guy who also fought once in 4 years, but got KTFO in his last fight.
LHW: hopefully, they announce Alex vs Ank soon
MW: give Izzy a 4th title shot after badly losing his last fight
WW: two boring fighters fighting after a while... it actually took a while
LW: give Poirier a 3rd title shot after losing badly in the first 2
FW: hopefully, they make Topuria vs Max

And yet, boxing seems worse
These guys have interim champions just to have them (sure, Dana also gave Aspinall the belt but he cannot fight for the title)
They have regular champions (wtf are those) and super champions
Weird long shorts
They get angry over glove size
Too many weight classes
4 orgs, you don't even know who is the champion..
