I despise the term alpha male - I can say with utmost veracity that the people who are concerned with being an "alpha" will almost assuredly never be one.

True. Every guy I have met who talks about manliness and "being a man" a great deal are people who are far from being paragons of masculinity. They're only hiding their insecurities with talk, while "real men" wouldn't give a shit about what others think and just do what they do.

I think the OP is a fun exercise, but I think none of it ultimately matters because standards of manliness varies from culture to culture and to individuals. I personally lean towards a Ron Swanson like character but I have a bias towards independence and self-sufficiency, and it is what I would like to be. I think gardening (growing my own food) and cooking are steps towards being more of a man, but where I'm from, people think I might as well be wearing a skirt.

The problem with the alpha male concept in humans is that it becomes difficult to define it in a way that isn't circular (interestingly, this was also a criticism of "selection of the fittest" back in the day).

Alpha traits are the ones that get the women and the men who get the women therefore have the alpha traits. I think there are a few qualities that can escape this circle (intelligence being one) but even those will vary by context, hence why OP can post 4 very different, and in some ways contradictory, dudes and call them all the same thing.

Animal society is very simple, basically the biggest/strongest gorilla is the alpha. That just doesnt work in the complex human society.
