I thought we could discuss what constitutes being "alpha" and I will start using a 4 very different persons that I think can serve as good examples.
1. Obama - Charismatic leader type
So I was watching a few Obama speeches and footage and noticed his insane "stage presence".

The video might not be the best example but it shows how Obama both has great presence but also is unfazed by the heckler. There are numerous examples of him handling hecklers like a god(and not mentioning other candidates). However one might feel about his political stances his charisma and humor is undeniable. Could one say that Obama is the pure alpha male? In once sense he did a very masculine thing; risking a lot going into two elections willing, beat everyone to become the most powerful man in the most powerful country and accepting probably the most difficult job in the world.
Obama's alphaness in a few points(according to me)
1. Risking alot in order to win.
2. Striving for power/accepting responsibility.
3. Great charisma and ability to make people like him on a personal level.
4. Not buckling from pressure. We obviously don't have perfect information about his feelings or health but he seems to do ok in comparison to Bush for example.
2. Rampage - Alpha via unpredictability
[YT]N0XsOkqOOvA[/YT]
I have always found Rampage interesting as a character and I think we all know or did know someone back in school that were like him.
Rampage's alphaness in short:
1. Humour.
2. Switching from giving positive feedback to negative leaving people confused and afraid of being victims.
3. Number 2. is only possible because of a physical advantage and visible aggressiveness.
Robbie Williams - not affected by the outcome alpha
[YT]Gs-P4uR_mLo[/YT]
[YT]wQb4ieoWp9w[/YT]
Robbie's alphaness:
1. Breaking social norms and framing social codes to his advantage.
2. Not caring what you think about him.
3. He can cry on stage, be bisexual and noone will get to him.
4. Has a mystique and charisma that draws people to him and make women go insane.
Brian Stann - When shit hits the fan hero
This is a mma site here after all so let use Briann Stann as an example.

1. Physical fighting ability
2. Reliable
3. Trustworthy, likeable and personal
4. Natural leader in dangerous situations
5. Offers and takes loyalty.

Now these four examples might be somewhat odd but I think they serve as good examples how being "alpha", or "affa" as Rampage puts it, can really differ.
Let say a plane crashes Lost style.
Obama type person would probably be the person easily would slip into the leadership role. He seeks power and is not afraid of taking responsibility and has the personal charisma to make people give up some of their freedom/coco nuts willingly. He could inspire people to work together and get shit done.
A Rampage type person could get into a leadership role simply by being a cold "alpha" and could likely end up fucking everyone's women not caring and most people would be too scare to do shit. He would never inspire loyalty or trust. Sooner or later he will be challenged when the camp is in great need of leadership or he fucks with people too much.
Robbie Williams do whatever he wants. He doesn't care. He is more of a nomad than a leader.
Brian Stann would not inspire people like the Obama type and his lack of charisma would not make him succeed politics wise even on a small island - and it does not matter since he is not looking for that official power, neither is he looking for the interpersonal power like Rampage. He is dedicated to duty and that will make people like, him follow him and do things that you would not do otherwise. If the island camp is attacked by cannibals Brian will the first to pick up a stick to fight them off and people will rally around him.
Do you think these four types are good examples of different aspects of alphaness? What are the underlaying traits that these four types share?
