Death fight: African Male Lion Vs Silverback Gorilla

A scaled reference for this hypothetical fight:

Why the fuck would anyone want to see 2 animals forced into a cage to rip each other apart.

You're revulsion is the appropriate response, but, well, they do. I just had to delete a thread with a video just like that due to animal cruelty.

ok... so this is a baboon which weigh between 30-90 lbs and 1 vs 1 it had a lion running scared. granted it was a female but consider the size difference between a male vs female lion and that of a baboon vs a silverback gorilla. size means fuck all especially when you consider a black mamba weighing 3.5 lbs has the potential to kill a lion. so i dont consider it obvious.

Gorilla's may be huge and muscular but they're vegetarians and the biggest pussies P4P in the animal kingdom.

This may be a zoo Silverback but he's running scared from geese! How you think that would go down with a zoo lion?

Is there any evidence of a Silverback killing anything dangerous ever? I think an angry chimp would hand a Silverback a beating and would make a much more competitive fight Vs a lion.

IMO the Silverback just runs and if he can't escape he just turtles.

Also going back to that story about Tyson offering to pay that zoo worker $10,000 to go and fight a silverback, with Tysons supreme level of self confidence back then I think he would've mentally dominated those apes and become the new alpha if this Gorilla's anything to go by.

@cm4w3

While I agree, in principle, that carnivores like large cats are definitely more aggressive, a video of a gorilla running from a goose doesn't really mean anything. Lions run from honey badgers, and it's not because they can't kill them. When they get pissed off, the honey badger dies, and dies quickly.

Gorilla would recognize genitals and destroy the lion one way or another.

People underestimate how strong apes are. A chimp that weighs less than a human can rip off a persons entire face. Imagine what a Gorilla could do if it got a hold of a Lions leg or dick?

yes but the point of that post was just because an animal is not a predator doesnt mean its a pushover. as a few people had said the lion wins easy because its a natural hunter

Right, but those animals coevolved on the savannah with big cats. They're huge, insanely strong, well protected and have effective defenses for a reason. They're formidable against big cats because evolution forced them to be.

Now, what's the reason that gorillas are huge (for a primate)? What was the evolutionary selection pressure for them to get that big? Evidently, it's for those occasions for demonstrating dominance for mating and territorial disputes. Not defending themselves against predators.

I didn't realize before reading this but evidently, big male gorillas do (albeit very rarely) kill each other in fights, but going against an animal that is evolved to kill other animals/fight other predators isn't the same.

Omg. It's 6am, I'm hungover and this is the first thing I see on Sherdog. These threads give me cancer.

The male silverback at my old zoo was scared of crickets. Pretty funny stuff. Also I once worked with a lion that sharted it was so scared because of an 18" long snake spooked it.

Oh, is it animal vs animal thread week again? I didn't get the memo.

Is this a joke? P4P, I can't think of a better design for killing among mammals than large cats. The Lion against a Grizzly is a better theoretical matchup. In that matchup I favor the Bear; specifically under the conditions that it's male, as large as they get (2,000+ lbs), healthy, pissed off, and forced into a space where it must fight. I think you would have much less difficulty persuading the lion to be aggressive.

Our own Zookeeper Gabe appeared to disagree with my opinion, and favor the Siberian Tiger over Alaskan Grizzly in a thread on it, but ultimately, all he really exclaimed was, "Threads like this give me cancer."

Lol. I hadn't even read this post when I just replied. Funny that's hat you remembered it by.

Yes this matchup overall favors the lion. Gorillas rely of bluff and bluster most of the time to avoid fights. Of course with their massive canines and huge muscles they could win a few. But overall I'm going with the kitty.

Haha, a lion would maul a silverback so easily. Smaller cats are known for hunting gorillas.

It's funny how Hollywood has really made people think gorillas are this top tier fighting-machine. You guys really buy into that stuff. Too much King Kong and Planet of the Apes.

Since both animals are close in weight, I give the edge to the lion because it has more weapons in its claws and larger jaws.

Like I said I would give it to the gorilla because it can use weapons
