Movies DC's CLAYFACE Movie (Max Minghella Joins Cast, post #35)

Superman is a bad character. I'm not saying it's impossible to make a good movie with him but it's definitely a huge uphill battle.

I’m curious. Do you think the Penguin series could have been as good as it was without first being introduced in “the Batman” film? (I personally hated the film but really enjoyed the Penguin series)
I think it could've worked without the movie but some changes may have needed to be made.

Superman is a great character, but he's difficult to write.

He personifies hope, while manifesting the idea that all the power in the world doesn't guarantee success absent the right intentions.

Christopher Reeve brought the perfect mix of nobility and the illusion of naïveté to the role.

I've always felt that Superman, Batman and Spiderman were the quintessential cinematic superheroes, but their stories have been told.

Mickey 17 Actress Naomi Ackie in Talks to Play the Female Lead in DC Studios' CLAYFACE Movie

Naomi-Ackie-Clayface.jpg

Deadline is hearing that Sorry, Baby and Mickey 17 actress Naomi Ackie is the top choice for the female lead in DC Studios’ Clayface, about the Batman antagonist.

While it’s still early in the dealmaking process, if she accepts the part, Ackie will star opposite Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries in the James Watkins-directed genre movie. We were first to tell you about Harries and Watkins’ attachment to the process.

Clayface will be shooting at Warner Bros Leavesden studio in the UK.

Word is leaking about Ackie and Clayface at an exciting time for DC. Its first movie under studio label bosses Peter Safran and James Gunn, Superman, is coursing to $409 million worldwide, another comeback for superhero movies. DC is heading to San Diego Comic-Con this week strutting its stuff for the second season of HBO’s Peacemaker.

Clayface is a shape-shifting villain in the Batman comics and got his introduction as part of Detective Comics #40 in June 1940. The original Clayface was a moderately successful actor who adopted the identity of a character he’d portrayed in a horror pic after turning to crime. Clayface has a body seemingly made out of clay and has appeared over the years in films, series, animated works, video games and other forms of media.

Producing Clayface are Gunn and Safran as well as The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. Chantal Nong is executive producer. The Life of Chuck filmmaker Mike Flanagan wrote the first draft of the script, with additional drafts by Oscar-nominated The Wings of a Dove and Drive scribe Hossein Amini.

The London-born Ackie has landed a slew of great roles including that of Whitney Houston in I Want to Dance With Somebody, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Netflix series Master of None, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and A24’s Sorry, Baby from Eva Victor which is currently in theaters.

They need to make a proper John Constantine movie.

It would take a miracle to do it right and it wouldn't make much money.

I would love it, absolutely, but most wouldn't.
They tried with that tv series. It was in the right direction but they killed it off after a season

Sad day, really enjoyed that show, but that's kind of my point. Real Constantine probably can't sell.

No joke. The animated Constantine was decent too.

I think the tv series didn’t sell because the lead was an unknown. I honestly liked that series too

The Handmaid's Tale Star Max Minghella Joins the Cast of DC Studios' Horror Movie CLAYFACE

Max Minghella, one of the stars of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, is in final negotiations to join the cast of Clayface, the next DC Studios movie heading into production.

Minghella will join Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie in the horror movie being directed by Speak No Evil director James Watkins. It goes into production this fall in the UK.

Mike Flanagan wrote the script for Clayface, a body-horror thriller centered on a Batman villain known for his ability to alter his appearance

The project is described as having shades and structure of The Fly, David Cronenberg’s 1986 feature that starred Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis and centered on the tragic relationship between a scientist who becomes fused with the DNA of a fly and the journalist writing about his discovery.

Clayface, which sources have said will have a budget in the mid-$40 million range, centers on an ascending actor (Harries) whose face is disfigured by a gangster. As a last resort, the actor turns to a fringe Elizabeth Holmes-style scientist (Ackie) for help.

Minghella will play a Gotham City police detective who is dating the scientist.

The movie is set for a Sept. 11, 2026 release date.

Minghella earned an Emmy nomination for playing the conflicted Nick Blaine in Handmaid’s Tale, which came to an end this spring. He recently wrapped the fourth season of the HBO drama, Industry, and saw his psychological thriller Shell premiered last at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Elisabeth Moss, Kate Hudson and Kaia Gerber.

They needed to give it a few seasons to breathe and find its audience.

Imagine if they cancelled after the first seasons of The Simpsons and Seinfeld. They could have, since they weren’t too great. But they gave them a chance.
