Daniel Cormier's criminally underrated boxing

What were you watching? DC was dialed in and was piecing Stipe up before catching him on the clinch break. He was also able to roll dith a lot of Stipe's shots.
To me it was fairly even they both landed some solid shots but DC's were busting up Stipe's face much more noticeably

DC is good in the clinch but his boxing looks awful outside of that. He walks towards his opponent like Frankenstein and Stipe looked like he was the superior striker before getting koed.

So the best HW striker in mma was out boxing him before he got KO'd? Yes how awful.

Of course he looks mediocre on the outside. Hes got a huge reach disadvantage.

I only watched the fight once but it seemed like Miocic was outclassing him from range. I didn't see anything super impressive about DC's boxing. If I remember correctly most of his effective strikes came from the clinch including the KO strike.

Daniel was landing on Jones, Gus & Rumble.

He's an underrated striker and gets inside well for someone with short reach.

I don't know why some people were so confident Stipe would KO/outstrike him.

He's got much quicker hands than people realize especially at HW. He made Stipe look like a slow old man in terms of hand speed.
Stipe was making DC look slow and awkward last night

DC was eating shots and flailing like an amataure

Stipe was handily winning that fight until the eye poke

Last night was more a case of Stipe not fighting to his best though

When DC had his palms out (typically called a "mummy guard" - to pretect the centerline and establish the jab) Stipe was too engaged with playing lead hand touch, and DC would pop the jab down the middle

For Stipe to not be able to to recognize that DC was exposed to hooks while utilising his palms out guard, is crazy and unimaginable.

Fient DC out to get him to reach with his palms out, then left hook over DC's outward stretched hands.

Left hook leads mixed up with feints.

Stipe also should've recognized that when ever DC went palms out, this meant DC was looking for the jab, and Stipe should've been ready to slip the jab and counter it with right overhands or pull counters

This just shows Stipe never had the actual boxing credtionals people claimed

Also Stipe was the far longer taller fighter. Where the fuck was his own jab?

Such a bone headed fight by Stipe. The fact Stipe was still winning while fighting his worst fight is very telling.

The fight only proved to me that Stipe didn't take DC seriously and never bothered gameplanning for DC

Stipe taking DC seriously and having an actual gameplan likely destroys DC.

DC's boxing did NOT look great at all

This,
@JustBleed69

AT BEST all you can say is that DC has "serviceable" boxing by MMA standards

Rarely ever sets things up. Zero combination punching. Jumpy to being fiented to the body. Bad habbit of always ducking in to his right. Not very well at cutting off the ring. Will often times find himself out of position after ducking or will step out of position. Zero countering game.

DC's bread and butter is Roman Greco clinch striking/dirty boxing

In fact by actual boxing standards, DC's boxing is down right fucking awful.

Stipe WAS out boxing DC until the eye poke

Im still disappointed by that result. I thought Stipe was going to be much more prepared for the clinch

Last night showed that Stipe did ZERO gameplanning for DC.
Agreed on dcs mma boxing. Stipe looked slow as well. Dc kept pulling away in a manner that people will def take advantage of. Stipes gameplan was shit.

Stipe was landing more shots

DC simply had the better chin

Some fighters have paper thin skin like Gsp and Stipe and get busted up form a breeze of wind touching their face.....

While others like Dan Henderson have titanium lizard skin and never ever show any damage...

So you can't really go too much off of that when the stats are telling a different story

Stipe was the one in control, on the front foot, landing more, and being the more effective boxer

DC had the jabs. Even a weak jab constantly touching you in the same spot is going to show damage etc

This is why more people should appreciate Conor McGregor

Conor is bringing actual legit high level boxing fundamentals into the octagon everytime he fights. Conor is showing MMA fans what real elite boxing looks like.

Boxing should be one of the most important arts to incorporate into everything else. Boxing really shines when all the other stuff is added (like Conor)

And I'm not talking about the kind of "boxing" that wrestlers learn from their grappling or MMA coaches lol, or the kind you learn from Muay Thai or kickboxing lol.

I'm talking about learning REAL established old school boxing from a real, ONLY boximg gym that has that boxing history

For those not aware, Conor came from the very prestigious historic Crumlin Boxing Club. That's why Conor is so next level. His boxing roots are fantastic and helped build the fantatsoc foundation of Conor's game.

Conor was a highly regarded teenage amature boxing prospect

Conor was learning REAL boxing from a real prestigious boxing gym that had real boxing history and knowledge

Meanwhile you watch fighters like DC and Jones getting by with terrible boxing and its frustrating to watch. But sadly LHW and HW are so paper thin those divisions don't have any legit boxers to expose them. But yet this is why Gustafsson exposed Jones. Because of the boxing (footwork included)

Even Stipe wasn't all that great, certainly not as much as people were claiming

If Stipe had the legit boxing he would've destroyed DC.

Part of old school boxing IS clinch fighting and learning how to defend and fight in - and out of the clinch

This is also why Conor has such an ironclad sublime clinch game too

Ok. First. Stop putting two lines between every sentence. Sweet jesus. Second. You're fuckin blind.

Might wanna go back and rewatch the fight man. DC was winning in the stand-up before the KO.
Not sure what your hate for DC is about, you are clearly in denial.
Also how are you posting with double yellow?

Anyone else find it odd Stipe didn’t throw anything other than straight punches? I can’t recall him throwing hooks or uppercuts. Stipe also exiting a clinch on the power hand side isn’t the best thing to do.

That being said, DC’s boxing isnt criminally under rated. Is it looked over? Yes. The guy has pop, good timing and can put punches together. The threat of him grabbing you and dunking you also greatly advances his offensive openings. He’s not as good defensively as he is offensively. However, he is solid there as well. He was able to get under and inside on a lot of tall fighters. He struggled getting inside on jones due to the threat of kicks. It wasn’t just low kicks, too. Jones can hit you with a kick at any level from a lot of different distances. DC has been able to reach and evade anyone, regardless of height disadvantages, that purely punches.

You want to give DC credit for doing well against Jones until the KO

Yet in the same breath want to ignore how Stipe was clearly out boxing DC until the KO

You're simply being biased.

And Gus arguably beat DC btw

If anything, when people make threads like this about DC, it's showing how over rated DC is.

Where is the thread for Strueve being one of the greatest ever? He also KOd Stipe.

Stipe was losing the hand fighting all fight and DC was ducking away from the majority of right hands stipe was throwing. DC Had the edge throughout the fight.

DC has ok boxing. It's not under rated because the only people who say it's great don't know boxing. He looked pretty sloppy really, his movements look slow and awkward. His exits are strange. He caught Stipe sure.. He said his camp found a :eek::eek::eek::eek: in stipes game and he exploited it. In no way did he look like a top striker tho.

It’s amusing how confident people are in their terrible evaluations.

He's one of the best in fighters in the game. Shorter guys could learn a ton from him.

This, 1000 times over, DC has shown time and time again how to fight a taller, longer man. Not just in the clinch and in getting the takedown, but also in the standup game.

I don't disagree with anything you said other than Gus arguably beat DC. To me that's discrediting DC's performance in that fight. The 1 judge who scored it for Gus is blind.

http://www.mmadecisions.com/decision/6500/Daniel-Cormier-vs-Alexander-Gustafsson

Out of 16 media scorecards, 1 scored it for Gus. It wasn't a controversial decision at all

This. It’s not awful I don’t think, but its not very good. He’s really solid in the clinch, he’s got power, has a pretty good right hook but that’s about it.
