Yeah, White shouldn’t have traded him for a guy with bad hips. To be fair though, Askren did come in handy by making Masvidal a star for a while. Sure, Masvidal was always solid before that, but he was mostly appreciated by hardcores. Askren made him a star to casuals. Jorge was even on the cover of one of those awful EA UFC games. Askren getting KO’d in 5 seconds was good for business.

No hate intended, I liked Askren.

He treated him fine. He put him on Fox to try to make him a star but nobody watched. He gave him one of the most stacked undercards with UFC 178 and it barley did 200k buys. He wasn't a draw so why is Dana gonna give him superfight money. Mighty Mouse was always ungrateful for everything Dana tried to do to help him get a bigger following

MM could have been just as big of a draw if Dana and the UFC cared enough to actually build a solid FLW division so there would be exciting match up's for him. It's only now that Dana and co are doing what they should have been doing years ago when MM was on top, which is bringing over guys from Asia because the talent pool at that weight class is much deeper over there than in other parts of the world.

MM has main evented maybe three or four ppvs bro lol. At least half of his career has been spent on Fox fight night. The rest were on other people's pay-per-views

I wonder though. 125 got Cejudo and others making it more interesting. Askren put on a great fight with Lawler and then turned Masvidal into a star they could milk.

Askren nearly got MURDERED by Lawler - literally thrown on his head and the absolute shit beaten out of him. He then got wildly lucky that Herb Dean made a bad call and stopped the fight. Robbie stood up and said WTF in real time with no delay.

He then proceeds to get embarrassingly ran through in back to back fights and retires. Keep in mind, Masvidal and Maia were not the best guys in the division at the time, they didn't need to be to smash Askren.

This was a truly terrible trade. Askren was 3-5 years past the time he should have been signed to the UFC but Dana refused to make an offer. He signed him after he formally retired.

DJ is obviously one of the best, but the UFC struggled to sell it to people. I'm glad DJ got to be paid in One like he should've been from the deal. It was kind of win-win for everyone.

DJ should have been paid better in the UFC and promoted. The UFC spends most of its marketing dollars on Dana's name and the brand, which is why they have so much trouble making stars.

Getting rid of MM allowed him to push more marketable flyweights, and Ben Askren was actually quite useful commercially.
