Roger Federer won the French Open en 2009 because Rafael Nadal got eliminated early, and no one would call him a "paper champ". That's because of the type of fans tennis has. MMA, on the other hand, has some of the worst fans in the world. There are too many haters, idiots and couch potatoes who don't give fighters the respect they deserve.

Cormier was only able to become champion AFTER Jones got stripped for legal problems. He had also already lost to Jones by this time. Aldo and Silva had established title reigns long before Weidman or Conor ever even came into the UFC.

But I can´t consider him a paper champ when the guy he had to beat was suspended/stripped/barred from fighting. Paper champ for me means an ilegitimate champ. He did everything he was supposed to do. He fought for the vacant title against the number one contender, and later rematched him. He also defended against Gus, who gave Jones the most problemas. Had Jon never came back, DC would probably have ruled the division for a long time, even if not as dominant as Jones. He was a legitimate champ. I mean, its like calling hendricks a paper champ because GSP was stripped. What was he supposed to do? Even if GSP came back and beat him again, Johnny was a legitimate champ.
