Cung Le vs Frank Shamrock (2008)

JaBaroni was tore up in the first round. Mazzigati bless.
Put respect on the NYBA's name

Really wished that Frank didn’t play Cung at his own game and instead tried to go to the deck. However I do wonder if it was heading his way if the arm didn’t break. Badass fight all the same
Really impressive how ling Cung could throw kicks for, most would have gassed long before he did

I cant say for sure what the reasoning was,but I do know that Seth Petruzelli said that when he fought Kimbo, they didnt tell him NOT to take him to the ground, but that hed get a big bonus for a KO. Which was an indirect way of saying "dont take it to the ground"

But Seth said he was gonna shoot for a TD anyway, but he managed to win the fight before he could even do that.

Didn't Seth get the knockout with a 1-legged flamingo jab? I can't remember exactly but it was hilarious after they hyped Kimbo so much.

It was a terrible way for it to end. The whole fucking promotion went up in flames

On October 4, 2008, prominent EliteXC fighter Kimbo Slice lost via early knockout to late replacement fighter Seth Petruzelli. The unexpected outcome of this fight drew a great deal of attention, and subsequent comments by Petruzelli that he was offered a monetary bonus to employ certain techniques during the fight (comments he later recanted and obfuscated), raised the question of undue influence by EliteXC representatives in fights. Significant debt incurred by parent company Pro Elite with no investors or buyers showing interest[8] caused the subsequent cancellation of the November 8, 2008 event. Combined with the Florida State Athletic Commission launching an investigation into the Slice/Petruzelli fight, Pro Elite announced on October 20, 2008 that they would cease operations.

Cung was def winning the fight, but he was gassing and Frank was starting to land alot more at the time of the break

I watched that fight when it happened. For some reason I don’t remember details, but I remember the post fight interview and Frank’s grimacing face from the broken arm. Frank had a certain flair for the dramatic.

On another related note, I looked up the Shamrock/Baroni fight. Whenever you wanna complain about the UFC commentary team, just remember that EliteXC used to have Mauro and Bill Goldberg calling fights. Yikes!

Mauro is the worst to listen to for me, always has been. Frank looked good in that fight though, Phil also looked bad.

Extremely fun fight …Cung was a lot of fun and strike force matched him well …wanted Cung vs Manhoef ….Shamrock a legend and before his time well roundedness ….shamrock vs Bas in the Ufc would’ve been fun

Great fight. Frank was washed up by this point and probably shouldn't have been fighting. Le wasn't in his prime here either but still had much more in the tank than Frank did. Prime Frank who smoked Tito would have stuffed Le inside of a Mayonaise jar.

Yes,that ending was amazing. I think ill watch it next.

I got to meet and interview Frank Shamrock ahead of this fight back in my journo days, and he was probably the best interview I ever got to do. Always will be a fan cos of that.
No shit.

I always assumed you were Scandinavian... No idea why.

Frank Shamrock GOAT btw.

Many called this Fight of the Year for 2008. It certainly was a classic, highly entertaining striking battle. Frank was in his comeback, and had just previously beaten Phil Baroni, and played the role of the antagonist is most of his fights in this period. Undefeated Cung Le,San Shou Superstar, also being in a bunch of martial arts related movies. Both guys fighting out of San Jose, where the fight takes place,so the crowd was absolutley mental.

P.S. if you watch this on Fight Pass for some reason there is no commentary, which makes it even BETTER.

I really wish this was an option for all fights. Anyway share your memories of this awesome battle!
It was a legendary fight. It also ended Frank's supposed mission to return and pick up where he left off by taking over the sport again.

Le was always a bad matchup for Frank even if he had been prime, superior wrestling and arguably better striking limited Frank's options to a stand-up battle. The kick that snapped Frank's arm was brutal.

I remember this, it was so hyped up. Loved it.

Very under talked about, but Frank Shamrock had a great run in the WWE

Frank is so underrated as a fighter. He was very well rounded especially for his time.

Imo the superior Shamrock brother.

When Cung Le came to the scene I truly thought this is the next MMA Superstar. World champion, 5th degree black belt in Sanshou, black belt in TKD. Perfect kick motion in all his kicks, and the stopping power. Cung also had good leg sweeps, which is part of Sanshou. Also short counter hooks (didn't have a long reach, but had success with them).

But it was just too damn late. He was deep in his 30's early in his career, so wasn't gonna last long. But for kickers he's right up there with all the best to ever do it in MMA. So a dream match for me was Cung vs Anderson.

Cos I had the floki av and I was so good at it that people assumed I was from there. There are def people still on this forum that think I am Danish.

Or am I?

Cung Le was awesome.
He also trained Rumble back then. That's why Rumble had very effective high kicks at the time.
Also, Cung fought at 185 while the much taller, broader, larger, heavier Johnson killed himself to (eventually) make 170.

Wasn't Cung Le a massive PED user? Real question. Don't be shitty.

A really entertaining fight with some good back and forth action. Frank shamrock looked like he was Phil Baroni from thier fight and Cung Le was just a step ahead for most of the fight.
Franks best weapon during this period was the straight right he threw with his head off the center line. Pretty basic but effective stuff. Cung Le mixed it up too well and Frank was just following and standing in place outside of range and getting lit up. He had success when he really pressured Cung Le and went for it before he was dazed by a Le head kick.
