Could knees become illegal after this?

There isn't a punch or puncher in all of boxing that can inflict the type of damage a well timed knee like that can cause.
i was pointing out that in a sport without any knees, kicks or elbows at all, people have died in the ring.

Time to discuss this I guess. They've made 12 to 6 elbows illegal because they're scared the power could crush a face. Well, we now have clear as day evidence that one of the legal strikes can actually obliterate the sinus/forehead.

I've defended MMA as safer than boxing for years, but I don't think we'll ever see a boxing injury like this. Personally, as drastic as it sounds, I think knees to the face need to be illegal now.

Thoughts?

Thoughts:you're a reactionary and mostly trolling. You do realize this happening is the exact opposite of what you think it proves. This happening only once ever in the sport proves that it's a freak and completely rare occurence

Something happening once has never proved anything in the history of ever. That's not how things are proven a clear repeated pattern of flying knees crushing skulls proves it. This was an outlier that proves nothing other than you don't know what you're talking about.

No I dont think so, if they remove knees then the sport is becoming way too soft, there is already too many.

Just a freak accident. Perfect timing as Santos ducked right into it. Knees will most likely go unchanged.

Personally I think an unexpected flying knee or a knee to someone coming in (a la Werdum vs Mark Hunt) or someone shooting for a takedown is a thing of beauty. (and very brutal!) but knees from the Muay Thai clinch is where I start saying - this is too brutal even for me!

Don't forget to mention that the knee was leaving the body of a highly trained undefeated at the time striker

Not saying they should be illegal, but let's not forget this knee that left Ol' Ironhead comatose for hours

This is a freak injury.

These guys are dangerous.

Making knees illegal would be like making checks illegal after Anderson Silva's leg break.

No. This is a very sad situation, I hope he will recover fast and full but this the sport. I saw horror injuries in any sport even soccer, bastketball, gymnastic.
After a bad armbar injury would be illegal the armbar? After a bad cut would be illegal the punch?

I imagine there might have been previous damage from a long career, but you never know.

Silva permanently dissmantled Rich Franklin´s nose, clinch knees are still legal, this is the result of a perfectly placed/timed/strong knee, its a one off injury imo.

Knees are allowed but 12-6's aren't....No sense!

I think i have heard Rogan say many times that that rule is dumb and is based off Karate shows....thing with knees is that it isnt expected to someone to be able to hit a standing opponent with a knee with such force, but it isnt the first time a wrestler has been caught up with a knee shooting for a TD, Shinya Aoki did it once iirc, perfectly timed knee too, and many others.

I thought it was because they went to an ice breaking competition and saw people breaking ice with elbows 12-6 and were like GOTTA BAN THAT SHIT

lets ban kicks to the head aswell and while we are at it why are people even allowed to get hit by strikes in the first place?

lets make mma a grappling contest and call it bjj or wrestling.

think how many thousands of fights happen every year with a rule set that allows knees to the head for as many years as you can think of and you'll never see something like that, and won't again for some time. freak accident - it would be like banning kicking your opponent because anderson silva broke his leg
