Not from smoking weed, I don't do that.

Tournament this weekend, I did horrible, but from the time my group gets called, when I'm on the mat and between matches my mouth was so dry. I don't recall it being this dry at previous tournaments, but maybe it was and I've forgotten. The bad breath that comes with it too is almost too much for me to stand. Maybe a secret weapon.

Nerves, dehydration? What do you guys do to combat this? I

was getting over a cold and congestion that really started to clear up mid-week before the tourney. Not sure what effect that had.

Did you eat any dairy products 24 hours before the tournament ?

Cheese, milk, yogurt etc will do that. Also need to drink a lot of water. The nerves will also add to it.

Adrenaline and dehydration, yeah. Just keep competing to get used to the stress of it, and stay hydrated.

You need to be drinking water. Drink coffee yes but make sure you are drinking plenty of water.

Sounds like a bit of dehydration plus some dry mouth from the stress/anxiety of competing (not saying you have anxiety issues, just that it is human physiology--your fight or flight response is gearing up, it is normal, experienced competitors just control it better) so I suggest drinking water.

Most people, I mean the vast majority of people, are dehydrated and don't drink anywhere near the amount of water they should. You probably aren't in this list because you train and compete in jiu-jitsu, which is bad ass. Still, it rarely hurts to drink a little more water.

The main thing is to SIP your water, especially during competition. You don't want to put a bunch of ice cold water on your stomach while you're hot. The cold can cause your stomach to spasm and give you a little nausea or indigestion. Plus, do you really want to gulp 16 oz and then have someone possibly take you down and go knee on belly? It isn't comfortable and you won't be able to move like you would like. There is a reason why boxers don't drink water in between rounds, they either wash their mouths out or sip small quantities.

Also, pay attention to how much coffee, tea and/or soda you drink. All of these have a diuretic effect on the body and will make you urinate more. Gotta replace those lost fluids!

Is normal.

No matter how hydrated I am, I still get bad dry mouth.

I also pee like crazy. I had to piss like 20 times before my match started this past weekend at the San Antonio Open.

After eight years the nerves always get me.
