Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) on Thursday tried to paint CIA Director Mike Pompeo as a homophobe during his Secretary of State confirmation hearing, even though he has opposed the confirmation of openly gay Trump appointee Ric Grenell.
Booker referenced a speech Pompeo gave at a church three years ago when he quoted a pastor as saying, “America had worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism. We’d endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle.”

“Is being gay a perversion?” Booker asked Pompeo.

The CIA director said when he was a politician, he did not think it was appropriate for same-sex couples to marry, and that he stood by that. However, he added he believed married gay couples should be treated with the “exact same set of rights.”

Booker cut him off, demanding to know repeatedly whether Pompeo, a conservative Christian, approved of “gay sex.”

“You believe gay sex is a perversion, yes or no?” Booker asked. “Yes or no, do you believe that gay sex is a perversion? … Yes or no, do you believe gay sex is a perversion?”

“My respect for every individual regardless of their sexual orientation is the same,” Pompeo was finally given the opportunity to answer.

Booker said as secretary of state, Pompeo’s views matter, since he would be representing the nation at a time where hate acts against gays were rising.

Yet, at the same time, Booker has staunchly opposed President Trump’s most prominent openly gay nominee Ric Grenell, as U.S. Ambassador to Germany — which would also be an position where he would represent the U.S. to the world.

Booker, as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, voted twice against confirming Grenell — once in October and again in January, despite overwhelming support for Grenell from gay rights groups.

Booker’s attempt to paint Pompeo as a bigot also comes after he endorsed former President Barack Obama for having the same views on gay marriage.

Obama famously stated in 2004, “What I believe is that marriage should be between a man and a woman.”

But in 2007, when he was mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Booker endorsed Obama, saying at a press conference, “Barack Obama is going to help ensure that the American dream — as bold and broad as it is — is accessible to all Americans.”

Obama stated his opposition again to same-sex marriage in 2010, saying he supported same-sex civil unions. It was not until 2012 that he said he supported same-sex marriages.

So, to summarize:

* Booker has chastised Pompeo for commenting that homosexuality is a "perversion"
** Booker opposes the appointment of Grenell, purportedly because Grenell has been very caustically political in recent years, has made divisive statements on Twitter, and has propagated bunk news sources while deriding more reputable publications
*** Grenell is gay, therefore Booker is a hypocrite for opposing his nomination
**** Booker is also a hypocrite in saying that homosexuality is not a "perversion" since he supported Obama's 2008 presidential campaign when Obama had failed to endorse marriage equality.

Booker should know that, if you want to denounce calling gay people perverts, you must support the governmental appointment of all gay people, or else you're a homophobe. You are also not allowed to align yourself with candidates who accept gay people but define marriage as between a man and a woman, even if the person they are running against openly denounced gay people as sinner and perverts.



Furthermore, Booker should know that he will never be able to get away with this sort of hypocrisy so long as the airtight logic and cutting wit of the political right is on the job.

Not a fan of the alt right, but it's pretty obvious what Booker was doing here.

The only possible responses to such an explosive question is "yes" or " no"? Yea, only if you're trying to smear someone.

It's possible to believe gay sex is a sin (like most religious people do), but still believe gays deserve the same respect as everyone else. If the implication is that you can't serve in government if you have religious values or opinions (like gay sex is sinful), that's pretty extreme in my opinion. I'm sure you have a lot of negative opinions about republicans, but does that mean you'd want to oppress them (or whatever) if you were a government official?

Typical hack attempt by the rightwing at 'exposing' hypocritic liberals. Unless Booker indicated his opposition to Grenell has anything to do with the later's sexual preference, then Breitbart is full of it.

Agreed that isn't okay to tell people their feelings are wrong if they feel uncomfortable or grossed out about the sex part of guys being gay (never met a guy who is grossed out about the sex part of girls being gay though) in the same way that they feel grossed out about the sex part of a 75 year old heterosexual couple's relationship, and you are correct that "abnormal" can mean not average in a statistical sense, but of course abnormal in regular use usually carries the implication that something is not okay, and there are folks who are clearly using that definition of abnormal on here.
