International Coronavirus, v4: South Korea in Red Alert as number of infected quadrupled in 4 days

Reading about it being transmitted by stool and waste is really scary given what we know about Chinese construction practices.

Guys relax, in Canada, the coronavirus is just the flu bro. There's nothing to indicate that it's airborn!

Our racism is hurting Chinese businesses so we should focus on dispelling myths so people travel into Chinese communities like they use to. I love how Canada still allows flights from mainland China, it makes us so much better than everyone else!

B.C. health officials try to dispel COVID-19 misinformation among Chinese-Canadian community

Health workers and officials in B.C. are working overtime to dispel misinformation being spread about COVID-19, particularly within the Chinese-Canadian community.

On Saturday, doctors gathered at the Aberdeen Centre shopping mall in Richmond to answer questions and bust some of the key myths about the new coronavirus, which has infected six people in the province.

Dr. Joseph Ip, one of the speakers who specializes in emergency medicine at Royal Columbian Hospital, says he and the other doctors hoped to clarify key aspects of how the virus is spread.

“Some people will say it’s airborne, some people will say it’s just droplets,” he said.

“It’s very important that we emphasize that this is a disease that is mainly spread by doplets. At this point there’s no indication that this is airborne.

But Ip says it’s also important to remind people how to protect themselves, including everyday handwashing and other steps that can reduce transmission.

“Just by exercising personal hygiene, it will go a long way towards protecting us from infection,” he said.

Ip says many rumours about the cause, spread and overall nature of COVID-19 have been propagating on social media, making Saturday’s event important for members of the health community to get the facts out there.

The prevalence of social media rumours in the Chinese community, specifically, is why the BC Centre for Disease Control began releasing a series of videos Friday featuring people stating facts about the disease in both Mandarin and Cantonese.

“We learned that inaccurate and anecdotal information was being shared through the WeChat community, which is popular with Chinese speaking audiences,” Provincial Health Services Authority said in a statement.

“Our hope is that by also creating videos in Mandarin and Cantonese, as well as additional print resources in multiple languages, we can provide this community with another source of accessible, accurate information and [offer] reassurance about our provincial COVID-19 readiness efforts.”

The misinformation has led to some serious impacts on businesses in Richmond, which boasts one of Metro Vancouver’s largest Chinese-Canadian communities.

That includes Aberdeen Centre itself, where the owners of one store had to recently lay off one of its salespeople.

“Since the outbreak, people just aren’t coming out like they used to,” said Walter Yeung, who is now helping out his parents at their Estherbella store.

“It’s really hurting small businesses like us.”

She also repeated that most people who fall ill with COVID-19 only develop mild respiratory symptoms, and that it’s relatively rare for the illness to get worse.

Why am I not surprised.

Notice how the Canadian establishment narrative is as usual, in total opposite land?

Clearly the most dangerous misinformation out there right now is the "nothing to see here" crowds BS lol.

Vancouver and the lower mainland have the largest chinese community North America and illegal goods have flowed through these communities from China since the start. I know, I use to buy fire crackers in Chinatown, they are illegal in Canada.

It's obviously pertinent to view this Chinese community as a potential ground zero for the virus to spread in Canada.

But of course all of the air time goes to "debunking myths about the chinese" community.

A community that has absolutely dominated economically in our culture and are in no way vulnerable.

Yep, no indication of it being airborne at all. Nothing to see here folks. And can you believe the nerve of people not going out like they used to? I mean, how dare people be concerned about contracting a potentially lethal and highly contagious super virus when there is racism to worry about!

I have some Canadian in-laws. Their in-laws in Vancouver say that people are avoiding Chinese restaurants and grocery stores. I don't know how true this is but that's what I hear from them.

Anyone here live in Vancouver B.C. ?

Ok I am gonna buy a bunch of these masks for myself and family. While I still can. As has already been said, too, best case is I just can use them for house/garden stuff eventually.

Anything I need to make sure /be aware of? I read N95?
I'm no mask expert, but I think here in the EU - (UK definitely) we have a higher standard mask than the US. We use FFP3 rather than N95.

Being honest this has lit a small fire under me. I'm better positioned than the vast majority to ride this out in perpetuatity due to isolation and supplies. But I will be growing wheat this year instead of being a lazy fuck about it. Will have to build a thresher to harvest, there are free plans online that use a bicycle as the power source. Also going to slap some top frame beehives together this spring and get them going. Also build a coup and get some egg-laying chicks.

Might just make a run to the costco 200mi away and stock up on rice, seeds, nuts, steel cut oats, fats and oils. If we get into a full fledged pandemic I'll have family who want to hunker down with me.

Good trial run for the shit I'm sure that will pop up in the coming decades
Sounds like a lot of fun even if the intent weren’t preparation for possible pandemic.

. Canada would rather die of wokeness than survive while looking racist.... I’ve written a few government officials and not one reply.

Man and i was planning to go to amsterdam in summer.

Will have to see whats the situation in summer

. Canada would rather die of wokeness than survive while looking racist.... I’ve written a few government officials and not one reply.

The messed up part is that only a few cities control all of Canada just because of the way our voting system works.

A large portion of the population is subjected to wokeness even though they vehemently reject it.

Toronto gets all the attention and wants to think it represents Canada.

Whatever their fantasy world will quickly turn into a nightmare if this gets bad.

Just googled it, seems right
Both N95 and FFP2 respirators showed average penetration levels of <1%. P100 and FFP3 respirators showed average penetration levels of <0.03%

I lived in Vancouver for 2 years and I grew up on the west coast.

Chinese restaurants in the Vancouver area have a long and documented history of health code violations, lies, serving people dog, cats, squirrels etc. And calling it Chicken or pork lol.

Or in Canadian liberal speak "racists making up myths" lol.

There is a strong sub culture of smuggling from china, something I approved of for many years :).

I'm not in Van now, but it would be wise to avoid any chinese food establishment at the moment.

Can we somehow petition for a travel ban go Italy, Iran, and Japan?

However, London said it had a few cases but it seems to have not transmitted there. I wonder why?

We used P100 cartridge 3M masks at college. N95 did not comply with the safety requirements.
@JDragon An N100 mask is even better than a N95. The N stand for Not oil proof. The P in a P100 mask stands for Oil Proof. The "100" means it will block 99.97% of particles.

Curious as to what was being smuggled?

Is any other country taking the same approach?

Health officials in B.C.'s Fraser Valley say contacts of the latest presumptive case of coronavirus in the province may have attended school in the area, but that there is no public health risk in the region.

Fraser Health sent a letter to the school district for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, about 40 kilometres east of Vancouver, on Friday, to explain that students had contact with the latest case. It also sent the letter to School District 43, which serves Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and the villages of Anmore and Belcarra.

The letter came a day after provincial officials announced a woman in her 30s, who had returned from a trip to Iran, had tested positive for the novel virus.

The case surprised officials when they learned she had only visited Iran, and not China or neighbouring countries that have had the bulk of COVID-19 cases.

Maybe Iran's coronavirus can link up with China's coronavirus in Canada.
