You should be scared of police anyway. Anyone who follows the law blindly isnt any safer than dealing with violent criminals. The police should be avoided and at all costs you should not cooperate with them. They would thoroughly enjoy destroying your life for frivolous reasons. They are a far larger danger than some gangster retard who can't read.

If I see an officer I sure as hell dont think oh I'm safe. I think I need to leave this area before there are problems.

I honestly don't get it. I live a law abiding life though. I used to repo cars and been involved in felony stops where I had guns pointed at me. I was never worried about going to jail cause I always had paperwork with me so I never had a problem. Now if I was acting nervous then it makes the cops nervous and if I do something silly then it can cause a bad reaction in a nervous cop. Police is like a wild animal. If you know how to act around them you are safe. Unfortunately lots of minorities act nervous around police because perhaps they feel insecure. Insecurity can arise if you are actually up to no good.

I just take it on a case by case basis. I think media has blown this whole thing out of proportion. Many police shootings I have seen are justified. Very rarely will you see an unjustified shooting. One example of an unjustified shooting would be like South Carolina iirc where the cop said he tried to use a taser against him. Most of the police shootings you can see on youtube are justified. You follow instructions or you will probably get shot. You act figedty and keep your hands out of sight then you will probably get shot.

We all look at life through the lens of our own experiences. I've had similar encounters with the cops as well, I was polite and non-confrontational, so were they and everything so far has gone off without a hitch. Now put yourself in someone else's shoes where they're harassed, intimidated and generally abused by cops and then let them hear those words. You don't think they'll be even more nervous next time around?

It's actually great advice. Tell the police nothing. Get a lawyer. Don't cooperate. Now if they are in a situation where they will use force against you, sure, cooperate physically. But don't converse with them. They want your life, they aren't your friend just trying to keep a community safe. They are wolves in sheep's clothing.

I think police are subject to the same things. They go on their own life experience and I am someone who has lived in urban areas and most of the hoodlums selling drugs on the streets are minorities. Police also realize this. So if they see a minority dressed a certain way then their prejudice will kick in and they will act more aggressive and they might go into fight mode if they misjudge an action. If I am in my old neighborhood if I walk up to a black guy standing on a corner and say something rude to him, I am most likely getting punched in the face. Now a white person, tbh, I doubt they would get physical. Maybe minorities act more aggressive because they feel oppressed and police treat them more harshly because they are known to act more aggressive. Sounds like a problem that just feeds itself. I just am basing this off my own life experience.

Gonna disagree on that. As a Police Officer you do have to conduct yourself in a certain way. Joking about murder within the department to a civilian, regardless of the intent, is about as unprofessional as it gets.

First is that we need police and we can't demand perfection. I know there's a huge gap between perfection and what this cop said but I think there's also a gap between what he said and what I would consider unforgivable behaviour (actually committing some act that harms someone in some way including threats or abuse of power).

Secondly, I have too much experience with too many cops and I'd say that dark jobs bring dark humour. If he really felt threatened in the moment but thought the situation could easily be calmed by making a stupid joke like he did, I can't say that should cost him his job in the absence of knowing his general behaviour/history. I've been in some fucked up situations and I've said and done fucked up things in those situations so I suppose I can empathize with what he may have been thinking.

No, they clearly can't, or people like you will seek to attribute sincere maliciousness to a joke-- as Voodoo did in his very OP. Humor offends. Ultimately, someone, somewhere will always find something humorous offensive when others cannot fathom how injury could be taken. It's not even intended to be a racist joke as the true spirit is self-deprecating, but even if it were, which would still be unacceptable, one should not overlook that he wasn't telling this joke to a black person. That was the error in his judgment. He thought this context would somehow matter, but he forgot that is a cop, and people resent authority figures telling risky jokes.

What's the implication? If a joke that a cop might tell could be construed as offensive to anyone, anywhere, not even specifically the person he is speaking to, then that joke is off-limits. That amounts to the deprivation of humor.

Bad judgment isn't a crime. It's a matter of competency, and cops aren't the only ones who can get fired for it, but they sure as hell aren't given the same leash as the rest of us.

If you don't judge the situation and just become this non compliant, asshole person... police will probably just haul your ass to the station and hold you for as long as legally possible and just make your life miserable. Then you have to go to court and maybe you get something maybe you don't. Your advice is horrible. Now if you actually committed a crime and are guilty, then yes don't say anything. Most people don't have to worry about that kind of thing. Maybe you are a low life or in the mafia LOL.

It would work if the person was black...it wouldn't work if the cop was making that joke while engaging said black person in his official capacity.

At a barbeque, it might be okay. Between a small group of friends, also probably fine. It didn't strike me as offensive but if I was the person in the car and the cop who pulled me over is joking about killing people, I'd be uncomfortable no matter who the subject of the joke was.

Yeah, I'd agree that there is a fucked up set of standards being enforced, in that a cop who makes a grave mistake that costs someone their life, or true pain and suffering, gets the benefit of the doubt a lot of the time, and a guy who makes a joke gets immediately shit canned.

I still think he deserved it, but the severity of punishment on a case by case basis is not very consistent.

If this was some hidden camera job, and they caught him making this joke off duty at a bar or something, I wouldn't think much of it. He was on duty though, and it's just unacceptable. You can get fired for insensitive jokes at any job if you offend anyone, and HR gets wind of it. Let alone a Police Officer joking around with a civilian, about cops killing black people.

Professional conduct is expected of most of us at our jobs. People in authority roles are no different. He fucked up, and it cost him. Shit happens.
